The Era of Woe

The Era of Woe, also known as the Dark Years or The Great War, was the war fought between the Seelie and Unseelie courts at the end of the Era of Awakening, after Faius and Azara left. The fighting was over how things were being run, who was in command, and what their destinies were, now that the Unseelie decided that they could take their destinies into their own hands.   It lasted for two centuries and it ended the Era of Awakening, resulting in the Planar Shift ("The Shift"), where the Archfey used their combined powers to shift the material plane away from the other inner and outer planes (the elemental planes, the Feywild, and the Shadowlands). Fey Day was created, the one day where the planes are close enough to intersect and cross over, and the Archfey left the Material plane forever. Per the treaty signed on the 11th day of Harvestmeet, no fey-born blood shall be spilled on the material plane when the portals are opened.   Post-Shift historians estimate only a quarter of the material plane's population survived the Era of Woe, and there was a deep distrust in the elementals, even deeper than there had been during the Era of Awakening, and they were exiled, as well as their supporters, to the poles. All civilizations were destroyed and, with them, most records, technological advances, and magical research. Historical knowledge of this time is limited, and most archfey, if you get an audience with them, will resist discussing the Dark Years as much as possible. The war left geographical changes as well, including the breaking of the Pangea continent into three smaller land masses, the sinking of Anhalt, and the scattering of portals.   Seven portals were left untouched by the Seelie court after the war, as a way for them to control the movement between the planes. They were created and connect in a portion of land called The Crossroads, and are guarded extensively.
