The Lodepearl

For much of its existence the Lodepearl has been venerated and protected by shadowstuff. As the essential part of the element of water, the Lodepearl held special significance to all of the world of Axildusk. It creates the conditions on the world for the shadowstuff to exist. Emanating raw elemental pulsations, the Lodepearl provides continual power which spreads outward in ripples through the verges, through Axildusk and even beyond the Vanishing Point into the universe. These ripples co-mingle with the other two elemental forces of the universe — earth and air — creating when they meet, troughs and peaks of elemental power. Certainly, there are two of the other eight Mainstay Worlds that are equally a source for these two other elemental forces.
The Lodepearl is a roughly human head sized object. It gleams from its own internal lustre, creating on its surface all colours of the spectral array. Predominantly it is a cloudy white shade which is emblematic of its purity.
When the worlds were still young, the Lodepearl needed to take its essentiality into the wider universe. This was before it had met the other two elements. It thought it best to appear among the creatures, beasts, races and relicals as a being and not as a prime elemental. In this way it might see for itself what gifting the universe would mean. Garbed in a shade-dark cloak, made out of shadow storm and darkfog, the Lodepearl walked upon the surface of all the worlds. Those that met the Lodepearl thought only that they were seeing an important figure. A hero or demilord from another place. Being what it was, the Lodepearl flowed through all that saw it and so it was always able to communicate in the fashion of the ones it met.

In time, it judged the beings it saw to be worthwhile and was pleased to grant its gift of water to the many. Few places in the universe are bereft of the Lodepearl's gift. Where there is no water, one can be certain that effort has been made to make it so by some force or agent of another power.

When its sojourn was completed and gift granted, the Lodepearl returned to Axildusk. Here it felt the closest of bonds. Somewhere in Shallowverge, it remains hidden to all but one or two individuals. These would be those that the Lodepearl decides to allow an audience to. There are still new things happening in the universe. The Lodepearl has a use for knowing these things better. Its own travel might be too disruptive. It sends envoys, usually secretly, out beyond Axildusk, to learn what they can and to return with this news.
