Avon'Col

If anyone was going to touch the celestial firmament from this material plane, it would be on the Avon'Col.
— Vadoth Yewmind, Wizard

Overview

The largest and tallest mountain in Awldor is also a dormant volcano. When the Avan'Col last erupted has been lost from memory. Many believe the landscape around it to be evidence of its ancient power. What remains today is a large mountain that can reasonably be considered its own range of mountains.   The sides of the mountain have become porous from the continuous battering from the hot, dry wind of the Oniruuru Desert. Many caves now seed its slopes. Closer to the top where the air cools the mountain takes on a more traditional look of a mountain capped with a snowy peak.   Avon'Col is an absolute titan of its realm. Its isolation in the middle of The Sandsea far from any other mountain highlights its enormity.

Geography

Perhaps to be expected of the tallest mountain in the world, Avon'Col has no shortage of geographic features.
— Artur Neha, Traveler

A Mountain of Holes

As mentioned earlier in this article, the sharp, craggy slopes of the Avon'Col appears incredibly porous compared to other mountains. These pores are caves upon closer inspection. These caves are believed to be the openings to a vast network of caverns within the dormant mountain. The size of these pores varies from the very tiny to the very large. From a size too small for a fly to a size so large as to be capable of housing a castle.   The porous nature of the mountain has led to some concern over its integrity. Many wonder if the Avon'Col will collapse one day due to a lack of structural support. It is far more likely that such a collapse will happen in stages and from the outside-in, and that the rate of collapse depends upon the whims of entropy.

Vista from the Tallest Peak

One can view the entirety of the Rayiq Mountains from the summit of Avon'Col, as well as everything else in the Oniruuru Desert. During a continental dust storm, the peaks of these mountains are the only landmarks visible. Otherwise, the combined perspective of standing at the top of a mountain and seeing other mountains creates the impression that the Oniruuru is bowl-like. Granted, this would be a doughnut shaped bowl, but a bowl nonetheless.

A Cloudy Crown

A massive lenticular cloud is seen on a rare occasion. This circular cloud hovers over the peak of Avon'Col and slightly drapes downward as if it intends to cover the slopes of the mountain in a thick layer of fog. Legend has it that once every hundred years this lenticular cloud will stretch all the way to the mountain ring and last a week. The unusual event is often a cause for celebration as such a cloud provides shade from the blistering sun for the entire region. Some view this as a favorable omen from the gods, and others find the strange phenomena concerning.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

Or there would be travel notes here if Taenya would authorize an expedition to the great volcano. Sorry to disappoint you, dear reader. - Archivist Bob   Bob, we have discussed this at length many times. It is simply too dangerous just to cross the Mountain Ring let alone the climb Avon'Col itself. If we had a travel ring established there to bypass the mountains and the Sandsea, maybe. And no, twirling sticks does not count as sword fighting experience. - Archivist Taenya   Taenya, you didn't need to write that last sentence. It's in permanent ink no less. - Archivist Bob
