Sea of Thorns
To the south of the continent, the sea of thorns is the bane of inexperienced sailors. the rocky terrain under the water means that in bad weather the many rocky outcrops and shallow areas become deadly for any ship that sails too close. With the magical nature of the Avarel islands makes travelling even more dangerous, since the terrain changes, the magical effects don't change for underwater islands, after all. This prevents major trade routes from the west going through the sea, instead choosing to go north to ports such as Greenharbor. Sailors also have to watch out for magical sea creatures such as the Sherak, which lurk in the waters and have claimed the life of many a careless sailor.
Geography
The sea has many rocky outcrops and shallow areas, making the area fairly dangerous. Additionally, like their full island counterparts, these rocks are not perfectly consistent in their position. The magical properties of the Avarel islands affect the sea as well, destabilizing the geography.
