Avarel islands

A mysterious group of islands in the Sea of Thorns. On the largest of these islands, the gods are said to have created magic, the laws of which they are said to maintain to this day. At the peak of the highest mountain lay a stone circle, called the Circle of Avarel, a neutral ground where the gods meet on occasion like they did in ancient times when they created their new magics. The islands in the archipelago are known for their unique magic. The magical nature of the islands interferes with the magic of all kinds, the magical plants gathered here have different properties than their mainland counterparts, but only while on the island. Creatures gain strange powers, and might also lose some while on the island. Spells have a high failure rate, and when they work it will rarely be what the mage expects. This change does not have any confirmed pattern, being different at night than during the day and shifting over time. The islands are difficult to reach due to its location in the Sea of Thorns, but even so not many people are willing to try, the magical nature makes it dangerous in and of itself, but without consistency in magical behaviour even mages do not usually want to go there, lest they blow themselves up. The exception to this is are the members of the Aurora Society who study the islands behaviour to further their understanding of magical theory.

Geography

A mountain range largely underwater, the islands are mountain peaks rising over the sea. Over time many of these mountains have gathered sand, forming beaches around the mountains, transforming them into proper islands over time. Each island in the chain is different. Different plants, different trees, different animals, but most of all: different magic, the shifting of the magic even makes the geography inconsistent, since occasionally, the island's location itself shifts in its entirety.
