The Torrent

"The Torrent" is the name for the mythical event that supposedly first created many of the monsters that permeate Avanima, particularly the Apogees. According to the legends it was such a terrible event that it nearly drove the Avani to extinction.

Summary

According to legend, during the Age of Development the Avani were watched over by the First Pantheon gods, benevolent deities who wanted only what was best for their creations. They nurtured and protected the Avani from the threats on Avanima and allowed them to prosper. However, the First Pantheon was followed from their home in deep heaven by the Apogees, nightmarish creatures forged from pure magic. These Apogees met the First Pantheon gods in battle and annihilated Luna. After driving the benevolent gods back to Deep Heaven, the Apogees began to rain down on the past Avani civilization and destroy them. Though these ancient Avani did their best, nothing could defeat the overwhelming number of foes that beseiged them. Ever since those dark times the Apogee have plagued civilization. Any city or group of Avani must constantly struggle against the seemingly infinite numbers of these creatures.

Historical Basis

It is unclear whether or not any of this legend is true: the magical Apogees are impossible to deny as real entities, and their destructive nature comes from somewhere. Archaeological evidence also indicates that past Avani had once been much more advanced than they are now. What appears to be ruins of a city can be seen on Luna from a telescope, and large pieces of debris can sometimes be spotted in the sky. However, the Apogee themselves seem unintelligent and, given that Avani at their current technological level can withstand them, it is doubtful that they could've destroyed a much more advanced Avani society or beings as powerful as deities. A theory beginning to circulate around some limited academic circles is that ancient Avani may have witnessed (or gotten caught in) a war between two powers capable of flight among the stars, and that the appearance of Apogees around the same time was only coincidental.
