Monarchy Questions

Questions of Origin:

     
  • How did the monarchical family first gain power?
  • Is the ruling power a conquering force, or have they always been there?
  • What reason do they cite for their right to rule?
  • Is the current royal family direct decedents of the original ruler?
  • Has the power ever changed hands? If so why? Did the royal line die out? Was the a coup?
  • Was this land always ruled by monarchy or was there an alternative system of government?
     

Questions of Rule


  • How does the monarchy assert their power? Through the goodwill of the people or through military reinforcement?
  • Who executes final judgement in the nation?
  • How does the population feel under this ruler-ship? Are they oppressed or proud?
  • How much power does the general populace have to affect events in the kingdom?
  • How does the kingdom feel towards the current ruler?
  • Are there different factions within the kingdom that support different heirs?
  • Is there animosity within the kingdom between those with differing opinions about the monarchy?
  • Are there any rebellious bodies? Are they a threat to the monarchy or merely a bother? How does the kingdom treat rebels?

Questions of Faith


  • Does the monarchy support the dominant religion of the region?
  • Is the monarch also the religious leader?
  • Does religion support or deride the monarchy?
  • To what extent does religious dogma impact the law of the land?
  • Is the monarchy indifferent to, supportive of or against religious practice?
  • How much power do religious leaders have in the kingdom?

These questions are not intended as a checklist to get your monarchy up and running. They are merely what I feel are salient points to consider when establishing this body. You need only focus on the points that are relevant to your narrative.
