Session 25: Zat's All, Folks!

General Summary

Pulling themselves out of the snow, a cold Nil-enor, chilly William, brisk Gul'Khaan and near-frozen Phaeradina find themselves face-to-face with a raging wildfire between them and the nearby village. Hearing screaming and ominous roars, they charge into the woods. With William leading the way, the party does their best to avoid inhaling the smoke. Unfortunately, Gul struggles, and when they emerge from the other side, Gul struggles to catch his breath. But there's no time to wait.
As Gul stumbles blindly, the group finds a village on fire, with goblin's fleeing from some invading force. One young goblin, filled with terror, stops at the sight of the party, and almost attempts to flee back the way he came, but ultimatly attempts to charge past when a persuing dire wolf trys to kill him. Phaeradina places herself betwen the goblin and the wolf, and lays bolts into the wolf, even kicking it as it runs past. Ultimately, William, Gul and Nil-enor defeat the wolf, but are unable to get any answers from the goblin boy before he flees into the night, headed for the woods. Phaeradina has caught sight of the raiders: a tribe of kobolds, using dire wolves and even polar bears as weapons of battle.
Phaeradina begins loosing bolt after bolt into the second wolf, and her summoned beast, an ape, decks a kobold square in the chin, instantly sending it to the afterlife. Nil-enor begins calling on the favour of Ahjmir as he sends several kobolds to their graves, and Gul looses eldritch blasts at the ones he can see. William rages out, and begins slicing kobolds and doing some serious damage to the wolves and polar bears. But those wild animals manage to tear up the party, plus some of the goblin villagers die. Hoards of kobolds sling rocks at the party, and the ape knocks out a couple more kobolds.
Eventually, the kobolds sound a retreat, and the party gets a moments rest. But as the burning village smolders, and the widows and parents mourn, the party hears a crying babe. Inside a small chest, wrapped in cloths and holding a stuffed animal tight, a young Zat cries into the night. Nil-enor picks her up, and attempts to calm her, but the priest is not a calming sight. Phaeradina attempts to coo the child, but Zat catches sight of the terrifying ape on her back, and her crying redoubles. Finally, William, the only parent, gets Zat to stop her tears, and she gurgles and smiles at the tiefling.
With Zat on his shoulder, William and the rest look around, and find more corpse than living people, and Nil-enor spares some prayers to the departed, and attempts to help the injured. One traumatized goblin denotes Zat as the daughter of one of the deceased, and the party tries to figure out what to do next. William thinks that Zat is still consious inside her baby form, and attempts to convince her to 'wake up'. It does nothing more than entertain the child. He also looks through the possessions of the deceased parent, Jorat, and finds a copper pocketwatch, driven by a tiny arcane motor. He gives it to Zat, who doesn't know what to do with it. They also try talking to the other goblin, who admits that "he's been gone a long time". They try to convince  him to come along, but he refuses. When the party sets out to leave the village, a thousand softly glowing white moths, seemingly coming from the stars above, decend on the group. Zat tries to grab at them, as the combine into a single form: a silver-white rectangle, glowing in the centre of the path. Stepping through, the party, including the now-fully grown Zat, emerge from the empty painting back into the Baroness's office.
Dazed, Zat tells the group that she doesn't remember what happened between arriving at the mansion and now, and goes to watch the dancing Baroness. She comments on the beauty of the music, and the Baroness replies that it was written by "her". Zat settles in, and the party gets set to enter the painting of Jindaar Vorjid. Before they do, Zat reminisces to William that she thought he seemed familiar when they met for the first time at the Guildhall of the Guild of Adventurers, and that she always felt warm near him.
