Atalanta Outpost

If there could be said to be a capitol city of the planet Aries-2B-86, it would have to be Atalanta Outpost, combining the pride of the mythological name "Atalanta" and the humility of the term "Outpost" after it is arguably no longer applicable due to the growth in size and population.   This city was first built in the 24th century A.D. by the Hubris Terraform DAO on a dead world by landing hardware from an orbiting space station. The metal structures, which had reached the end of their fatigue-life in orbit were carefully landed by atmospheric crafts and modified (many being cut in half) to accommodate the gravity-bound lifestyle of the arriving archaeologists, terraformers, and scientists who colonized the dead world and made it their lives' study.   Atalanta established itself as the foremost provider of new archeological and anthropological discoveries immediately. Even prior to the first day of operation of the Calypso atmospheric refinery recombinator, archaeologists and scientists pounced upon the mysterious planet and uncovered a wealth of answers and even more questions of this civilization of large stone cities with mechanically operated gates and mills, and buildings and machines of unknown function.   One discovery of a new branch of science put the icing on the cake. The long lost civilization had advanced functions in the power-delivery technology dubbed, "ámmos-aulos", after the ancient Greek, "sand pipe". The technology was similar to hydraulics, but used flowing dry sand rather than water to perform mechanical functions of great strength. In some cases a single grain of sand could tip a scale and release a larger quantity of sand forming a switch which in other cultures would be called a semiconductor. At what appeared to be an ancient port, a device was found which performed measurements, performed basic calculations, and stored records which appeared to facilitate a "price per pound" of foodstuffs or other materials brought to the port to trade and registered credits and debts.   As word of these discoveries spread across the known galaxy back to humanity's home world of planet Earth, warp ships were dispatched to bring even more specialists to puppy-pile onto this bizarre lost civilization.
