Magical Orders
Magic comes in numerous different varieties, ranging from the stewpot magic of domestic mages to unpredictable and often-dangerous turmoil magic. People across the Realms have discovered ways to harness magic and bend it to their will, but this power always comes with consequences. Every mage will, at some point, experience a lapse in concentration during the casting of a long ritual or accidentally mispronounce a syllable within an incantation, leading to a seemingly-infinite number of side effects, from inconsequential to life-changing.
It's common for mages to focus their studies on one or two orders of magic. Mages who specialize in multiple magical orders are rare because of the differences between them all.
Manifestation
Despite the many forms magic can take, the most basic signs of its use remain the same: temperature fluctuations and a smell in the air similar to that of an approaching storm.
Localization
Due to the fact that magic runs through every Realm, it can technically be harnessed to do a mage's bidding anywhere, though the exact way it's done varies depending on where in the Realms a person is located at any given moment due to the way in which energy flows throughout the known universe.
