Roselawn

Roselawn is a large city located in the south of the Kingdom of Hildonia that straddles the Aiberrun River. The town is part of the demesne of Prince Devon Hellbourne, and is administered by Margress Ellery Umbermoor. It is the hometown of Ra'zon.

Description

Roselawn is built along the Aiberrun River that separates Hildonia from Mitterböd. It is bordered to its west by the foothills of the Whiterope Mountains, and to its north by the edges of the Tasrand Wood. Swaths of fertile farmland can be found due south before giving way to the muddy swampland of Stinkweed Bog.

Old Wharf District

The Old Wharf District is located on the northern side of Roselawn and acts as its main residential center, as well as the location of the Roselawn Academy of Humanities. Built around the main docks of Roselawn, for much of the city's history is was seen as a slum until recent targeted gentrification efforts led to its rebranding. Today most of Roselawn's merchant class resides in this district, and it is peppered with guildhalls, taverns, and restaurants.
  • Aureline Bridge: A large drawbridge over the Aiberrun that marks the northern entrance into the city via river.
  • Roselawn Academy of Humanities: A place of learning initially constructed to facilitate study of the subterranean Volarian Kingdom ruins, which over time has expanded its curriculum to include several other humanities such as arts and history, as well as the academic study of magic.
  • Frosh Walk: A road near the Academy containing a large number of bars and dance halls which is popular among students.
  • The Five Brothers Inn: An inn along the Frosh Walk that contains a secret entrance into the Volarian ruins, utilized as a front by New Dawn

Tradecross Promenade

The Tradecross Promenade is a large market square at the center of the city, built around the intersection of Roselawn's two main streets of Riverside Run and Hilldown Lane. The center square also serves as a town center of sorts allowing for public addresses, festival blessings, and on rare occasions public executions. A number of side markets have built up around it, as well as numerous neighborhoods and apartment buildings inhabited primarily by less affluent traders as well as students of the Academy.
  • Jee-Kai's Supplies: A general store operated by a lizardfolk trader named Jee-Kai
  • Killarby and Sons Metalworks: A smithy operated by a halfling named Samson Killarby, alongside his two sons Desmond and Quincy.
  • Dockwalk Market: A small open-air farmer's market near the docks that is open at all hours. Harold Merchantel operated a stall here for a short time.

South Rise

At the southern edge of town is a large hill that ends as a sharp cliff overlooking the city's fairgrounds. The South Rise is the name given to the collection of manors and estates built up and around this hill. The city's upper class make this area their home, and several estates dot the path up the hill.
  • Margrave Manor: At the very top of the hill is a relatively modest abode inhabited by the town's margrave
  • Warded Fort: A small fort located at the bottom of the hill that serves as the city's prison as well as the headquarters of the local Watchmen.
  • Roselawn Fairgrounds: A large park on the southern outskirts of town that is used as festival grounds for the city's many celebrations, most notably that of the Feast of Saint Paloren.

East Town

On the east bank of the Aiberrun, separated from the majority of the city, is a collection of slums and seedy neighborhoods known as East Town. It is inhabited by a large number of residents who were pushed out of the Old Wharf District during its gentrification.
  • East Wall Taphouse: A seedy tavern that serves as the headquarters of the Black Rose Crew.
  • Ironseeker Park: A small park containing a brass statue of Ra'zon, and dedicated to his memory by his fellow adventuring companions.

Chapel Isle

On the south side of Roselawn is a small island called Chapel Isle, located in the center of the Aiberrun River. The island is the site of the Odelion Priory, a temple dedicated to the Everforge. It is quite well-known for its expensive wines, which are made from grapes grown in small batches on Chapel Isle itself.

Volarian Ruins

Beneath the city can be found an extensive labyrinth of ruins from the ancient Volarian Kingdom, which have over time facilitated the growth of the Roselawn Academy of Humanities.

History

Roselawn was once a major trading port and a stopover for ships heading out into Woolen Bay and beyond. However, as boatbuilding technology improved over the years and allowed ships to sail longer and farther its strategic importance has diminished greatly.   In response to economic decline, over the past century the town has made a concerted effort to rebrand itself as a cultural tourist destination, holding several festivals throughout the year. The most notable of these is the annual Feast of Saint Paloren celebration, which due to the town's sizable population of Curtheni descendants has long been the largest and most popular throughout the kingdom.   Roselawn also became an important center of academic learning after a large network of underground ruins was discovered beneath the city. The large influx of archaeologists and historians led to the establishment of the Roselawn Academy of Humanities.   In 1855, a terrorist organization called New Dawn which used Roselawn's underground network of tunnels as a base of operations, attempted to assassinate Queen Harriet. In response, then-margrave Anton Thornsby enlisted the assistance of the Eloqui Order to track down and execute the leadership of New Dawn. Unbeknownst to the margrave New Dawn was secretly being instructed by proxy through a cabal of church officials led by Prior Confessio, who in turn manipulated a group of adventurers to facilitate Thornsby's death.
