A brand new continent is discovered far west of the Known World.

/* I want to say the voyage that discovered it happened because of a drunken bet followed by refusing to back down once sober. Basically people knew the rough size of the globe right, because shadows and all that like ancient greece, but nobody had any idea what was on the "back half" since it was so hard to get to. So argument breaks out, first about whether they could even get there (everyone eventually agrees it's theoretically possible long as they don't die) and then about what they'd find if they did. Is that where the gods live? Is it the world that you see in the mirror? Is it a bunch of islands? A brand new continent nobody knows about? The place all the sea monsters from the fairy tales come from? What if the world's actually only half a sphere and we fall off? What about, instead of where the gods live, it's where they go when they die? Shit what if it's where we go when we die, and when we go there we'll actually be dead? Then it gets out of hand, people daring each other to make the voyage for real, starting a betting pool on what they'll find, trying to commission a ship, putting out ads for a crew. Once everybody sobered up, nobody wanted to be the first one to back down, so off they went. And the rest, as they say, is history. */
