Viscounty of Verbobonc
History
Long before the city was dominated by humans, the keep and surrounding village was built and inhabited by elves. This was before the first burnings and clearings of the great forest Cormanthyr (c. -2000 Merithic Era). Ancient paintings depict the port town with impressive elven towers, narrow walkways, lofty wooden houses, elegant stone villas, and parkways filled with delicate and elaborate pieces of art.
Sometime c. -1800 long skinny ships brought an invading force to the lands. Depicted as reptilian-humanoids the invaders where the first known aggressors to massively burn the forests during conflict with the natives of Adlak. During this time the local elves offered refuge to the gnomes and dwarves of the Kron Hills to the south, and banding together to fight the invaders from the seas. Verbobonc from then until the current day has been a military town. It is believed that it was during these times that the first walls of the city were built by the gnome and dwarf refugees.
As humans entered the world stage and began starting fights and wars with other races and themselves, the elves retreated from many of their territories back into the forest, this included the city of Verbobonc, leaving the gnomes alone to fend and survive for themselves; as the dwarves would also retreat back to their strongholds (even if they were now inhabited by orcs and other creatures). Humans quickly took the now castle of Verbobonc as the local gnomes had no care for such lavish livings and quarters. It was the kind leadership of the human army who came to the town that allowed the alliance of gnome and man, and the future growth of the city and both races therein. It was this man who created the motto of Verbobonc, to solidify the alliance in the minds of its citizens "Earth and stone, man and gnome".
Religion
The original religious practices and beliefs of the Elvish inhabitents where most likely in line with the Elvish pantheon. However, the Historical Preservation Society believes that this would have changed during the refugee event that allowed gnomes in. This would have no doubt changed political and religious practices, leading sages and historians to believe that this time period showed the first rise of druidic beliefs, evident in architectural designs of the time.
During the time of the first human settlers in the area, it is believed that the area turned to the Cult of the Sun, and early branch of Pelorianism, but would have many revolutions seeing it become predominantly druid once again by the end of the ancient era. It wasn't until the Medieval Era and the crusades that the city would change once again and welcome the Prime Pantheon as the majority religion.
