Cult of the Dragon

The Cult of the Dragon is the oldest known religious group dedicated to the worship and devotion to dargons. With most races being early on in their personal histories, they had little of anything of value to give to the dragons, so the dragons enslaved most of the world. According to the Historical Preservation Society this religious cult was likely the worlds first global empire, although since the homeland of humans is unknown, it is uncertain if this land was also controlled, leaving the theory just that.   Not much is actually known about how this original Cult of Dragons operated, as only 4 temples dating back to this time have been found, and all on the dragonborn controlled continent of Veluntia, who have taken heavy security measures to keep anyone from visiting such holy sites.

History

Revival

Around the year 1,500 of the Second Age the cult undersaw a revival of sorts, becoming the Wearers of Purple also known as the Keepers of the Secret Hoard. The Wearers of Purple were a semi-religious evil organization venerating undead dragons, or dracoliches, founded by Kovis, a powerful wizard. Kovis started the cult with no original worship of the undead, and the early cult, known sometimes as the Cult of Kovis, worshiped living dragons only. Kovis possessed great power, in a manner similar to Elminster and Khelben "Blackstaff" Aaronson. In Kovis case however, the additional power brought delusions of godhood and madness, and he came to believe in time that "dead dragons shall rule the world entirely" and began to work toward that goal, fighting the several Chosen of Mystra and even the god Lathander along the way. While Kovis has died, risen as a lich, and fell again, his cult lived on, continuing to threaten the Western World.   The Wearers of Purple venerates dragons, evil dragons in particular, and specifically dead evil dragons. They reanimated the gargantuan corpses as powerful and fell dracoliches. The Cult acted as an information network for its draconian "masters", brought gems and riches as offerings, and encouraged evil dragons to become dracoliches. Their belief was that dracoliches were destined to one day rule @Asyur and beyond. They could become inhabited by objects which were created in their image especially with the image of the skull.
