The Azen

"The gods will guide our hearts!"

The Azen are the pantheon of gods which have together created the planet of Astronasia. Although in the modern era most gods have abandoned the planet most peoples and races have still stayed loyal to Azen, and there is little to no alternative religions on the planet. The only exception of this are the Orcs, who after slaying the Dusk Lord, the first and only known Azen to ever die, have abandoned their faith.   The Azen own their name from that most of them have been created from the brains of the great toad Az.

Structure

The gods are ruled by the two high gods Tenno and Konsulh. Under them are the other gods and on the bottom is the Dusk lord, a fallen god.

Mythology & Lore

In the beginning there was nothing. Not a word, not a sign, not even a thought. Only an empty void filled with mist was there at the beginning of things. The mist flowed and swirled violently in a maelstrom, and eventually condensed into the biggest drop of dew that ever was and ever would be. This dew drop fell further and further into the coldness of the void, slowly freezing into a solid drop of ice, but in the heart of ice just enough liquid remained to hold a tadpole, the first being called Az. This tadpole grew and grew, nourishing itself of the ice around it until it became a giant toad, bigger than several worlds, and broke from his icy home.   The toad floated happily in the nothingness it had found, letting the water in its body cascade down into the void. From this rain new life was formed: First two fish, then two lizards, and finally two man. These where the first gods, Tenno and Konsulh. The two gods swam in the waters they where born in, hunting the fish and lizards inside, but they desired somewhere to cook, somewhere to rest, somewhere to call home. So they began to swim upstream, higher and higher until they eventually discovered the source of the water, Az. The boys climbed on the toad, making their homes on its back. At first they where happy: they had food to eat, water to swim, and a place to rest. But they just didn't feel at home.   Az however didn't make it the two gods easy either, every time they began a fire he would begin to shake. Konsulh, the more juvenile of the two, was amused by the temperament of Az, but Tenno, who saw himself as the leader, got more and more frustrated with each twitch and jerk, until he finally had enough, and slaughtered the beast. With a great trust he stabbed his spear into the temple of the great toad, slaughtering it. Then he went to work to make himself a perfect home: from its eyes he made a sun and a moon, which would forever follow each other in a strict order. From its warts he made the stars, and from its brains he created the rest of the gods. His brother Konsulh asked if he could also create something, and Tenno lacklusterly agreed. From the skull of the frog Konsulh made a case, around it he wrapped the flesh which he turned into continents, and the dimples and irregularities he filled with the water that once rained from the beast. Konsulh was proud of his work, even if it was less impressive than the stars, the celestial bodies, or other gods that Tenno created.   Tenno, Konsulh, and their new gods went on to create the rest of the this plane, and eventually the mists above, which they turned into islands., creating the primordial world and the dreaming world.

Cosmological Views

The universe is a endless hole covered by a thick mist filled in absolute darkness. On the upper section of this hole are a series of floating islands called the Dream world, which are always both bathed in eternal light and clouded in eternal darkness at the same time. Never does the dream world feel the joys of a sunny day or the fright of lost sight. In this land the dead wander and the living rest, only to reawaken at night as they go to sleep in their own world.   Far under these islands are a collection of slimy little stars, which reflect the light of the sun in order to twinkle in the night. Those stars float as a cloud above an oddly shaped blue and orange orb, both perfectly round and irregular, wet and dry, hot and cold, happy and sad, and all other paradoxes which make a planet a planet. It is called Astrohanasia, and it is home to one super continent with a similar name. Around this orb are two other orbs, one only orange and one only blue: they are the sun and the moon, which rotate around Astrohanasia in a perfect line, so that they might never see each other.   And under the stars, Astrohanasia, the moon, the sun, and even more stars the void continues. Going down forever more, far beyond the comprehension of mortals.

Tenets of Faith

The Azen expect of a civilised person to known the following rules to heart:   1. To always follow the rhythm of day and night.   2. To go where the wind may flows favourably.   3. To laugh in the face of adversary until either it goes away, or I do.   4. To be kind to all living beings, no matter how big or how small they be.   5. To accept that everything will one day end up bleaching upon the land and return to dust.   6. To fight those that wish one harm and protect those that wish one fortune.

Worship

Worship is usually done through small sacrifices, dedicated to a specific god, inside of local temples or roadside shrines. The sacrifice is made out of a food or object related to the god it is destined for and three sticks of incense which point in three of the four cardinal directions. This sacrifice is then placed in a small box woven from Harakeke Flax fibres and left in the sacred place for the gods (or local wildlife) to consume.
