Skyhaven

Skyhaven is a breathtaking city perched atop the towering heights of the Gargantuan Pinnacle, the largest mountain in Astrium. The city is a marvel of both nature and design, its gravity-defying architecture harmonizing with the rugged cliffs and steep slopes of the mountain. The buildings appear to float, with intricate bridges and platforms suspended between rocky outcrops, giving the city an ethereal quality. Stone-carved homes and aerial walkways, reinforced with skyroot—a rare, buoyant wood found only at high altitudes—allow the Hadozee to traverse the city's multi-tiered levels with ease. The Hadozee, a race of nimble, gliding humanoids, have mastered the art of navigating Skyhaven's dizzying heights. Their ability to leap from one platform to another, catching the wind beneath their wings, makes the city as dynamic and alive as its inhabitants. They have built an economy based on high-altitude trade, wind energy, and craftsmanship, producing everything from wind-catchers that generate power to airships that dock in the city's upper reaches.   Skyhaven is also a spiritual hub for the Hadozee, who believe that the mountain's summit touches the boundary between the mortal world and the skies above. This has made the city a pilgrimage site for both Hadozee and other sky-worshiping cultures in Astrium. Temples built into the cliffs, often inaccessible except by flight, are dedicated to hadozee deities of the sky, wind, and freedom. Pilgrims come to meditate in the rarefied air, seeking enlightenment and a closer connection to the heavens.   The city's main plaza, known as the Windspire, sits on a vast, flat platform near the peak, where ceremonies and festivals are held to celebrate the winds that shape the Hadozee way of life. With panoramic views stretching across the lands below, Skyhaven truly feels like a gateway to the heavens, where earth meets sky and the spirit soars.   Skyhaven is a breathtaking city that defies the laws of gravity, perched high atop the Gargantuan Pinnacle, the tallest mountain in Astrium. This city is a marvel of both natural beauty and architectural ingenuity, with its floating stone-carved homes and aerial walkways crafted from skyroot, a rare, buoyant wood found only at high altitudes. Government

Skyhaven is governed by the Council of Winds, a group of five elected elders, all of whom are seasoned fliers and spiritual leaders. The Windlord, currently Iriath Skyfury, serves as the head of the council and oversees the city’s trade, defenses, and spiritual matters. The council works closely with the Skyguard, an elite force tasked with protecting the city and its airways.

Defences

Skyhaven’s primary defense is its inaccessibility. Positioned atop the highest peak in Astrium, it can only be reached by those capable of flight or airship. The Skyguard, a force of elite Hadozee and Aarakocra warriors, patrol the skies around Skyhaven and are trained in aerial combat. Airship patrols and magical wards placed at key points around the city help protect it from airborne threats.

Industry & Trade

Skyhaven’s economy thrives on high-altitude trade, wind energy, and craftsmanship. The Windcatchers harness the mountain's constant gales to generate energy for the city, and the artisans produce tools, weapons, and magical items made from skyroot and rare metals extracted from the cliffs. Airship construction is a booming industry, with the Aerodrome serving as a hub for both trade and transportation across Astrium.

Infrastructure

Skyhaven’s infrastructure is built around its vertical design. Skyroot bridges connect floating platforms, and the Windspire Plaza serves as the city's main public square, offering panoramic views of the lands below. Homes are built into the mountain’s cliffs or suspended from high towers. The city's energy needs are largely met by wind-catchers, devices that harness the powerful winds to generate energy and power Skyhaven’s airships.

It aims to be a large enough settlement to have a stake in the development of Astrium and its future.

Skyhaven’s aerial festivals and wind-based rituals also bring visitors from all over Astrium.   The Day of the Ascendant Winds Date: 8th of Verdantia   Purpose: To celebrate the Hadozee's connection to the skies, honor the spirits of wind and air, and seek blessings of freedom, wisdom, and good fortune from the deities of the sky.   The Windsong Procession At dawn, the entire city gathers at the Windspire plaza, where the celebration begins with the Windsong Procession. Hadozee musicians play wind instruments crafted from skyroot, whose haunting melodies resonate in the thin mountain air. Citizens, dressed in flowing garments that catch the breeze, march through the city, releasing colorful streamers and flags that flutter behind them like wings. It’s a symbol of the Hadozee’s symbiosis with the wind and their ability to harness it for guidance and freedom.   The Sky Leap Ceremony At noon, the winds are strongest, and the highlight of the celebration takes place—the Sky Leap Ceremony. The bravest Hadozee glide from the highest points of the city, leaping from platforms and bridges to soar through the air, competing to see who can ride the winds the longest and most gracefully. This event, more than a test of skill, is seen as an act of communion with the spirits of the wind. Elders say that during the Sky Leap, those who soar with grace are receiving blessings from the sky gods.   Spectators from all over Astrium gather to witness this spectacle, with many hoping to receive a divine sign or omen in the wind patterns.   The Festival of Aether As the sun begins to descend, Skyhaven’s plazas transform into bustling marketplaces for the Festival of Aether. Local artisans display wind-powered crafts, airship pilots offer rides to visitors, and merchants sell rare herbs and minerals gathered from the mountain. Wind-dancers, performers who glide across platforms in the air, put on stunning shows that reflect the lightness and freedom the Hadozee treasure.   Skyhaven’s famous wind-catchers are also showcased—giant, ornate devices that spin in the wind, believed to capture not only the breeze but also the spirit of the winds themselves, ensuring the city's prosperity for the year to come.   The Skyfire Ritual The festival culminates with the Skyfire Ritual at dusk. Pilgrims and Hadozee elders gather at the highest temples, carrying glowing lanterns. These lanterns, shaped like birds and stars, are released into the night sky, symbolizing the souls of the Hadozee ascending into the heavens. The elders offer prayers to the sky deities, asking for protection and favorable winds in the coming year.   As the lanterns drift higher, the festival concludes with a spectacular display of fireworks—Skyfire—which light up the night and reflect off the vast expanse below, creating the illusion that both the heavens and the earth are ablaze with celestial energy.   The Day of the Ascendant Winds is a time of unity, spiritual reflection, and celebration, embodying the Hadozee’s bond with the winds and their constant desire to soar higher, both physically and spiritually.

Architecture

Skyhaven’s architecture is a seamless blend of natural cliffs and man-made floating platforms. Buildings are carved directly into the mountain or constructed from skyroot, creating a feeling of weightlessness. Suspended bridges, aerial walkways, and sky towers are connected by windcatcher platforms, and the city has an ethereal quality as it appears to float above the clouds. The towering spires are often adorned with wind-chimes and flags that dance in the ever-present winds.

Geography

Perched at the summit of the Gargantuan Pinnacle, Skyhaven overlooks Astrium from its highest peak. The city is surrounded by sheer cliffs, with the Cloudveil Temple built directly into the mountain's face. The Aerodrome is located on a flat plateau near the top, while most of the city’s residential and commercial districts are suspended on platforms carved into the rock.

Climate

Skyhaven experiences a cool, windy climate year-round, with thin air and low oxygen levels. Summers are breezy and mild, while winters bring intense winds and snowstorms that make travel difficult. The city's windcatchers ensure that the winds, while strong, are harnessed for energy rather than a destructive force.

Natural Resources

Skyhaven is rich in skyroot, a rare wood that grows only at high altitudes, and crystalline minerals extracted from the cliffs. These materials are essential for the city’s construction, trade, and crafting industries. The constant winds are also harnessed as a renewable energy source.
