Githyanki

Astral Raiders, Psionics, Silver Striders   Once members of a people who escaped servitude to mind flayers, githyanki split from their cousins, githzerai, and fled to the Astral Plane. In that timeless, silvery realm, githyanki honed their psionic powers and built a great city called Tu’narath. They have since spread throughout the multiverse, starting in outposts outside the Astral Plane, called creches, where time passes and their children can reach adulthood. A lanky people with skin tones of yellows, greens, and browns, githyanki complement their physical prowess with psionic might, instilled in them by mind flayers and cultivated over eons in the Astral Plane. Now all githyanki can use their psychic bond with that plane to access splinters of knowledge left behind by beings who travel, live, and die among the silver astral clouds.   Githyanki who reside in the Astral Plane can live indefinitely.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Githyanki are tall, thin humanoids with elongated features, slightly pointed ears, and skin tones that vary from pale yellow to deep green or brown. Their bodies are built for agility and speed, and they have wiry, lean muscles. Githyanki hands and feet are slightly larger than average, with long fingers adapted for precise movements, whether in battle or psionics.

Genetics and Reproduction

Githyanki reproduce in the same manner as other humanoids but have a prolonged gestation period due to their prolonged lifespan. Genetic traits include a natural inclination toward psionics, often manifesting as a minor telekinetic or telepathic ability in offspring, and their skin tones often align with either yellow or green hues.

Ecology and Habitats

Githyanki are most comfortable in environments with magical or astral influences, preferring isolated areas for creches and outposts. On Astrium, they inhabit Efristan’s Astral Quarter in Zenothar, where magical energy suffuses the land. They thrive in places rich in psionic energy, which aids in their physical and mental conditioning

Behaviour

Githyanki are disciplined and determined, with a focus on self-mastery and honing their abilities, whether in combat or psionics. While they are generally guarded, they form close bonds with their creche-mates and value loyalty. They maintain an air of detachment, often seeing themselves as protectors of Astrium from extraplanar threats. Githyanki value strength, both physical and mental, and are naturally competitive and unyielding in the face of challenge.

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

Highly intelligent, with a focus on psionics, tactics, and extraplanar lore.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Githyanki possess an innate connection to the Astral Plane, granting them unique extrasensory abilities. They have heightened psionic senses that allow them to perceive disturbances in nearby psychic energies, read minds, and communicate telepathically with those nearby. Their perception of time is unique due to their origins in the Astral Plane, which gives them a near-immunity to aging and a deep sense of spatial awareness.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Githyanki names are often harsh and clipped, with guttural sounds, such as Calthar, Vrax, or Niraak. Titles or honorifics are common, often describing significant achievements (e.g., “Void Striker” or “Astral Hunter”).

Beauty Ideals

Githyanki appreciate a lean, muscular physique that reflects discipline and training. Scars, tattoos, and markings signifying battles or victories are admired, and many decorate themselves with silver jewelry inlaid with gems believed to strengthen psionic abilities.

Gender Ideals

Githyanki society values individual strength and capability above gender roles. Both genders are encouraged to excel in martial and psionic pursuits, and leadership is based on merit and achievement.

Courtship Ideals

Courtship among Githyanki is subtle and often involves respectful challenges or displays of skill. Suitors may exchange tokens imbued with minor psionic enchantments, symbolizing a bond and a shared purpose.

Relationship Ideals

Relationships are based on mutual respect and individual growth. Partners often train or journey together, supporting each other’s personal development while maintaining a sense of independence.

Common Etiquette Rules

Respect for mental and personal space is paramount. Uninvited telepathy is considered rude, and they value decorum in social interactions, preferring direct, concise communication. Displays of strength or skill are often offered as formal greetings or farewells.

Common Dress Code

Githyanki attire is functional yet ornate, often incorporating armor or leather with silvered or gem accents. Robes, tunics, and armor with high collars are common, designed to convey both status and readiness for battle.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Githyanki are deeply proud of their history of resistance against the mind flayers and their struggle for independence. Their culture celebrates psionic mastery, battle tactics, and mental discipline. Zenothar, their shared settlement with the Githzerai, embodies their newfound commitment to unity, and they actively engage in the defense of Astrium from extraplanar threats.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Astral Communion: A meditative ritual performed weekly to attune with the Astral Plane, allowing Githyanki to access ancestral knowledge and seek guidance. The Rite of Blades: A ceremonial sparring practice where young Githyanki prove their skill with psionically enhanced weapons, symbolizing their readiness to defend Efristan. The Eternal Vigil: An annual event where Githyanki and Githzerai meditate and stand guard together to honor those lost to the mind flayers and pledge unity against future threats.

Common Taboos

  • Mind Domination: Using psionics to dominate or control another’s mind without consent is highly taboo, as it recalls the mind flayer oppression.
  • Betrayal of Creche: Abandoning one’s creche or fellow warriors in battle is seen as the ultimate dishonor.
  • Dishonoring the Astral Plane: Disregarding or speaking ill of the Astral Plane and its spirits is forbidden, as it is considered the source of their power.

History

Githyanki in Astrium are descendants of those who fled enslavement by mind flayers, escaping to the Astral Plane where they honed their psionics. After the Realmshatter, they found a new home on the island of Efristan, where they’ve resided for centuries. Although the Githyanki and Githzerai initially maintained separate territories, they formed a tentative alliance during the Second Pandora War, leading to the creation of Zenothar—a settlement meant to symbolize peace and collaboration between the factions.

Common Myths and Legends

The Shattered Dream: A tale of the first Githyanki who glimpsed freedom in the Astral Plane, symbolizing their rebellion against mind flayer enslavement. The Silver Guardian: A myth of a powerful Githyanki spirit that appears to defend Efristan from great danger, believed to be the soul of a warrior who gave their life to protect their people. The Astral Flame: A legend about an ancient psionic fire in the Astral Plane that grants immense power to those who prove themselves worthy, representing the pursuit of inner strength and enlightenment.
