Barren Expanse

The Barren Expanse was once the Sea of Leaves, a vast, lush forest home to the elves of Aspor, a breathtaking natural wonder that covered much of the continent. The canopy was thick with green, and the air was filled with the hum of elven magic and nature's song. However, as the centuries passed and the battles with the Sins raged on, the forest slowly dwindled, scorched by dark magic and relentless warfare. The ground that once nourished towering trees was turned to sand, and the temperature rose, transforming the once-verdant land into a harsh desert.   The fine, soft sands of the Barren Expanse make construction difficult, causing structures to sink or collapse. Despite the odds, halflings found a way to survive and even thrive in the shifting sands. Their resourcefulness allowed them to adapt, building their homes on the rolling dunes, using magic and clever engineering to keep their settlements from sinking. Another unlikely race to call this desert home are the ogres, whose massive steps compact the fine sands beneath them, allowing them to move through the landscape with ease. Their nomadic tribes are known to live in harmony with the desert, leaving behind trails of hardened sand that do not sink.   Today, the Barren Expanse stands as a significant barrier to expansion across Aspor. The fine sands are too unstable to support train tracks, and efforts to lay down foundations have been thwarted time and time again. With the desert’s constant shifting and the difficulty in establishing infrastructure, travel across the expanse remains one of Aspor’s greatest challenges.   Points of Interest
  • Star Valley:
The bustling halfling city at the heart of the Barren Expanse, Star Valley is a marvel of ingenuity and resilience. The halflings have constructed their homes and marketplaces on top of large, magically-enhanced platforms that float just above the surface of the sand, preventing them from sinking. The city is a lively hub for trade and culture, with intricate wind-powered mechanisms and sand-sailing caravans constantly moving between settlements. Star Valley is also known for its vibrant festivals, where halflings gather to celebrate their survival and prosperity in such an unforgiving land.
  • Shrine of the Unyielding Light – Barren Expanse
Tucked away in the unforgiving desert of the Barren Expanse, the Shrine of the Unyielding Light stands as a beacon of hope amidst the harsh landscape. Built from rough stone, the shrine appears modest in construction, but its spiritual significance is unmatched. The shrine itself is small, with a single, intricately carved statue of Tyr standing over a set of perfectly balanced scales, his figure bathed in a continuous ray of sunlight that pierces the clouds even on the stormiest days. The scales beneath him reflect the idea that justice, though sometimes elusive, will always find a way to shine through the darkness.   Pilgrims travel great distances to this remote location to seek Tyr’s guidance and offer prayers for fairness and law. The faithful leave small tokens—coins, pieces of broken shackles, or hand-carved representations of scales—at the base of the statue, asking for clarity and strength in the pursuit of justice. Protecting this sacred site is a young brass dragon, Brassspine, who has taken a deep interest in ensuring the shrine remains unspoiled. The shrine has become a rallying point for those in the nearby settlements, encouraging everyday citizens to uphold the principles of justice in their daily lives and fostering a community dedicated to fairness, even in the most trying times.
  • The Sunken Paths:
These are the hardened trails left behind by the ogre nomads as they travel across the Barren Expanse. The Sunken Paths are the safest routes through the desert, as the compacted sand offers a stable surface for walking and light structures. Over time, these paths have formed a web of natural roads that crisscross the desert, offering a safer way to traverse the otherwise treacherous sands. However, following the ogres' trails comes with its own risks, as they are fiercely territorial and do not welcome outsiders lightly.
  • The Whispering Sands:
This region of the desert is known for its strange, eerie sounds—when the wind blows through the dunes at just the right angle, it produces a haunting melody that can be heard for miles. Some believe that the Whispering Sands are haunted by the spirits of the elves who once lived here, their voices carried on the wind. Others think it’s a natural phenomenon caused by the shifting sand and the wind patterns of the desert. Regardless, the Whispering Sands have a reputation for disorienting travelers, and many who enter this area find themselves lost and unable to find their way out.   The Entrance to the Underdark:  Hidden beneath one of the larger dunes is a deep chasm that leads directly into the Underdark. This entrance is guarded by the Sovereign Terra, a fanatical cult of Illithids who serve Xakar the Overseer. The Illithids work tirelessly within their hidden tunnels, expanding their influence across the Barren Expanse and into the deeper caverns of the Underdark. Their ultimate goal is unknown, but rumors speak of dark rituals and twisted experiments taking place beneath the sands, tied to the Overseer’s mysterious planar ambitions.   The Barren Expanse is a land of extremes, where survival hinges on adaptability and resilience. Though it may seem desolate and unforgiving, it holds secrets that have yet to be uncovered, and mysteries that draw adventurers to its windswept dunes.

History

The Barren Expanse was once a lush forest that was home to the elves - known in common as the Sea of Leaves. This forest extended over what is known as the continent of Aspor. During many battles with the Sins the forest had dwindled down and down until the ground became sand and the temperature has raised to turn the land into a desert.   The sand was fine and soft, making building structures hard. Suprisingly the Halflings took to the sands and have thrived there while, as well as an unlikely denizen the Orges; who steps are so dense the sands condense and dont sink into the ground.   Today the Barren Expanse is causing the train lines from expanding across Aspor with the sand being too fine to lay down pillars.
