Kaiti Elves

"Sharp stomach pain? That would be my arrow, dear. Hey! Don't bleed on my fletching!"
— Sentinel Ypona

As the elven race diversified over the centuries, there were those individuals and communities who preferred to stay true to their origins, those who embraced their heritage of twilight, woodlands and the fey. Noted to be traditionalists among the elves, the kaiti - "Wood elves", as they came to be known - have slowly developed into a culture of their own - one that prized balanced and traditional living with nature. Some see them as isolationists, and at worst xenophobic, though in truth that is far from being the case. However, they do tend to jealously protect their domains and guard their way of life from encroachment of those who would seize them for their own - hardly different from many other sovereign entities.

Despite that, the kaiti interact, trade, and mingle with neighboring cultures and people. There are many realms that count kaiti settlements among their number, and they often retain autonomy, while protecting the wooded lands in return. Similarly, there are realms that are their sole home - sprawling arboreal settlements of wonder and nature magic that only few not of elven blood will ever see. There they live in harmony with herbs and trees, critters and animals; in a symbiotic relationship that is almost considered barbaric by other elves. In such communities, the kaiti worship their fey gods and hone their magnificent skills, with patience and legacy of ages as their teachers.

Basic Information

Anatomy

While the kaiti retain the same structure of most other elves, their builds tend to be more sinewy and wiry, their way of life conditioning their bodies to almost coil-like muscle structure. They are often slightly bulkier than other elves, though that would be much less obvious to non-elven observer. Their skin tones are more earthy than pale, and can even exhibit various very subtle tints, from browns and yellows, to even greens and purples. Similarly, their hair and eye colors exhibit a matching variety.

Ecology and Habitats

The kaiti are at home in wooded environments - from sprawling coniferous woods of northern Dol Teroth, over dark gloomy oak forests, and even jungles of Karamtal and rainforests of Grondir. They thrive in such environments and know them better than a rogue knows hidden alleyways of their city. Their heritage and upbringing have uniquely conditioned them to life surrounded by tree trunks and with canopies over their heads.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The kaiti are famed for their eagle-like sight and cat-like hearing, even more so than other elves. They owe this to their predator-like lifestyle and their constant attunement with nature around them.

Darkvision. Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, kaiti have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. They can see in dim light within 60 feet of them as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. They can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Keen Senses. Kaiti have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Fey Ancestry. Kaiti have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put them to sleep.
Trance. Kaiti don't need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The common word for such meditation is "trance.") While meditating, they can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, elves gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.
Kaiti Weapon Training. You have proficiency with shortbow and longbow.
Fleet of Foot. Your base walking speed increases to 35 ft.
