Overview
Asherah is a world torn apart by a drawn-out apocalypse; long-standing climate change and violent conflicts had already gouged a significant chunk from the planet's population, and further opened the door for disease and famine to take out swathes more. As most governments collapsed in on themselves, rebellious militiae and influential individuals saw the chaos as an opportunity, and grappled with one another for power.
Some decades later, the world has settled down. Many regions are now uninhabitable or at least inhospitable, but some towns and cities survived, and new settlements are growing from the ruins of the ones that didn't. The people of Asherah are slowly beginning to rebuild their world; whether they will learn from the mistakes of their predecessors has yet to be seen.
Notably, Asherah is not a human-populated planet. Hammerharks, otoclodes, pelamines and sascids, all sapient creatures of varying anatomies, call Asherah home, and the arrival of a fifth sapient race - a few thousand space-faring, metallic neofae - is causing a stir. A largely peaceful and inquisitive race, they have already begun making contact with and even assimilating into Asheran societies with varying degrees of acceptance.
As the dust settles, with industrial-scale resource mining and mass production grinding to a halt, Asherah is beginning to restabilise itself - and in the wake of this new stability, things that have laid dormant and hidden are beginning to awaken.
