Raonull Adhairt

Raonull Adhairt (a.k.a. Mage of the Mountains, Crazy Bastard)

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Raonull is a tallish and skinny man who rarely sees the sun. He is often sleep-deprived and dehydrated due to his reluctance to leave his experiments. He also has heavy scarring on the right side of his body from an incident in his youth that he covers pretty much constantly with a glamor spell.

Body Features

Naturally pale skin, long light brown hair with slight waves, very slight with some flab that he's managed to build up.

Facial Features

Average sized head with a square jawline, wide cheekbones, wide forehead, Eyes appear sunken with heavy bags, constant stubble, right eye is slightly cloudy.

Identifying Characteristics

Runic tattoos all over his body - mostly on arms and chest, though there are a good many on his back as well; small scars from cuts on his hands and lower arms; scarring on his face from a split lip and brow; large swath of burn scarring on the right side of his body (whole arm, up and down his side, large facial area) from an accident in his youth, though it's kept mostly hidden by a glamor which he anchors with runic tattoos.

Physical quirks

Was right-handed, but had to learn to use his left after his accident; Slight limp; chews his lip when thinking; twitches his right hand when nervous or stressed; often squints (impaired vision in his right eye), grips his right hand with his left when remembering his imprisonment.

Special abilities

Raonull is a Spellweaver, so he is able to manipulate his magic to do whatever he wants. This, combined with his skills in Magecraft allows him to create new enchantments and various wards and glamors that no one else would be able to create.

Apparel & Accessories

His clothing is layered and flowing, as is the traditional Mage garb. He wears either long-sleeved tunics or short-sleeved ones with another shirt underneath, loose pants, tall boots, and a cloak (at all times). He also almost always wears leather gloves.   His clothes are the colors of Idorough (red, brown, with pale blue accents), though he also will wear shades of green (the colors of old Arrijion).   When traveling, he wears a cloak and robes of black and yellow, the colors of Wyrueir to avoid detection.

Specialized Equipment

Dia-steel Sword - A longsword that he enchanted himself, Raonull's blade is considered a masterpiece by blacksmiths and Magecrafters alike. It will never dull, acts as a conduit for spellcasting, is virtually indestructible, and cannot be wielded by anyone else. He always carries it with him and keeps it disguises as a plain steel blade with a glamor embedded in the crossguard.   Claret Equipment - Even as a retired Claret, he was allowed to keep his personalized equipment including a crimson cloak, a padded and enchanted leather curiass, and a never-full satchel.   Mage-hunter Armor - Left over from his time in the Capital, Raonull also has a full set of Dia-steel armor that he keeps hidden in his home. It is fully enchanted with the leather accents dyed the colors of the Void (sickly yellow-green and black).

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Was born to a couple of Mages on the run from Wyrueir in the first full year of his rule (allegedly). He was left with some peasants and then found by the Mage-hunters and brought back to the capital where he was raised by Mages there and taught a variety of magic types, languages, and swordsmanship. He was inducted into the Mage-hunters, a group of Mages and warriors whose job is to hunt down Mages who refuse to join the Abyss (the new Mage Guild) and bring them back.   At some point during this period, he met and befriended a mercenary and freedom-fighter named Primeira who helped him escape the city. He then made his way with the group to Idorough where he interviewed with the Clarets and was inducted as a researcher in 1483.   He retired in 1490 after certain circumstances forced him to make a choice and opened his shop where he remains to this day.

Gender Identity

Male: he/him/his

Sexuality

Asexual and Aromantic. This boy is down for some platonic cuddles.

Education

Tutored by skilled and powerful Mages in the capital.

Employment

Worked with the Magecrafters in the Capital before he left, then was accepted into the Clarets in Idorough. Now, he runs a shop for common people who need magic charms and other such things and does his own research.

Accomplishments & Achievements

He has developed some of the most powerful magic wards of all time. He also has developed the current model of Magelights and lifts, as well as the anti-thief wards that are commonplace in affluent parts of Idorough.

Failures & Embarrassments

His experiments do go wrong occasionally (to his displeasure). One particularly bad accident happened while he was still in the Capital and the explosion left him with terrible scarring on the right side of his body that he minimizes with glamor spells of his own making.

Mental Trauma

Extreme guilt for his actions under Wyrueir (building war machines and producing more effective mind-bending magic specifically). PTSD (bouts of dissociation, flashbacks, depression, and paranoia) from his time as a Mage-hunter.

Intellectual Characteristics

Extremely logical and intuitive. Also simply very intelligent.

Morality & Philosophy

Is willing to help anyone who asks for help (including those who don't ask) and will not hesitate to use his magic to do so (unlike most Mages). Is firmly against Wyrueir's mantra of Fear and tries to do everything in his power to make up for his actions as a Mage-hunter, though it does seem at times to be more out of spite than a want to do good.

Taboos

Harm to children, time wasting, pointless research, inhibitions to progress

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

His main motivation seems to be to do enough good to make up for his actions as a Mage-hunter. He helps the common people and refuses to be affiliated with any single organization. He will go great lengths to protect the people he has gotten to know.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

He is naturally talented at Magecraft and has an intuitive understanding of how spells fit together and react. He is also a very talented swordsman and retains his skill without needing to practice constantly.   He has difficulty casting spells that he did not create. This mostly has to do with the fact that he has a different understanding than most Mages about magic, so his magic will flow differently through the spell and cause it to malfunction. As such, he has to rework every spell he wishes to cast to his own magic.   He also cannot cook anything that tastes good. His food is edible, but not to most people's standards.

Likes & Dislikes

Likes: The smell of paper and old books, the buzzing feeling of active magic, Lasair's company, the thrill of battle, poking fun at his "friends", his plants.   Dislikes: bright light, dealing with academia, entitled people, spicy food, being interrupted, drinking

Virtues & Personality perks

Patient, willing to listen and debate, wants to do good, compassionate, low tolerance for bullshit, naturally curious

Vices & Personality flaws

Stubborn, gets hyper-focus, indecisive, lack of empathy, lacks a filter, ambiguous morality.

Personality Quirks

His right hand twitches when he's stressed and/or nervous, stares into the void when thinking, grips his right hand and traces the scars and tattoos when thinking about his past.

Hygiene

He often forgets to clean himself when he gets into an experiment, so his hair is often greasy and limp and his clothes days old. He usually has smudges on his face from his writing implements and does not shave for days at a time, resulting in a very short beard.

Social

Contacts & Relations

He has plenty of contacts within the research department of the Clarets and friends among the soldiers as well. In addition, many professors at the College greatly respect him and his intellect and are more than willing to do favors for him.   He is well-liked among the people in the Undercity because his prices for charms and other magical objects are very reasonable and because he is willing to help them with his magic for a low cost where other Mages won't.   Some of his "friends" are Firebloods, and as such he tends to supply their parties with magical supplies, though he refuses to officially join and has done so since they first approached them after he retired.

Family Ties

No blood family anywhere, as far as he knows.

Religious Views

He goes through the motions of praying and giving to the Creator and his acolytes, though he does not seem to truly adhere to their teaching and has been citing that he only does so because he is required to by the city in order to keep his shop (Mages must for religious reasons).   He also believes in the Ashblood, though not enough to actively look for them like the Firebloods.   His other beliefs are not known.

Social Aptitude

Raonull actively avoids social situations unless he is cornered and forced into them. He is capable of charming others and can be an incredible speaker when he is talking about something that he loves, but otherwise is awkward and stumbles over his words.   He is very polite and formal until he feels comfortable with someone; then he's not afraid to speak his mind and will often time forget to use a brain-to-mouth filter.

Mannerisms

Despite his almost timid bearing, he stands up straight and only slouches when he's sitting at his desk. His eyebrows are very expressive and are what people learn to read for his emotions.

Hobbies & Pets

He keeps a small assortment of house plants in his shop and spends most of his free time caring for them.

Speech

His voice is very deep with a thick Idorough accent. He speaks very quietly and often messes up sentences. He also mumbles to himself when he's deep in thought. He will raise his voice when he wants to be heard.   He greets people very formally and always says his farewells, even if it is a very trivial meeting and parting. He is also more than willing to throw out an insult if he feels it to be necessary.   He also uses certain phrases that have fallen out of popularity (old slang) as well as metaphors, and can be caught using idioms in other languages.

History

Raonull met Lasair when she was attempting to gain entry to the Summit to apply for studentship. He vouched for her despite them never having met in their lives and she attached herself to him, figuring out where his workshop was and generally hanging around and asking questions. He, despite complaining about the constant intrusions, appreciated her curiosity and helped her gain admittance to the College and took her on as his apprentice.

Nicknames & Petnames

For Raonull: Old Man, Rao For Lasair: Red, Kid

Relationship Reasoning

It makes logical sense. Raonull is an accomplished mage with ties to both the College and the Clarets who was willing to take on an apprentice, and Lasair needed someone to take her on if she had any hope of furthering her training to go and fight the voiders.

Commonalities & Shared Interests

Both have an almost insatiable curiosity that's gotten them into trouble. They also both have an innate talent for spellweaving which lends itself to both magecraft and casting. They're stubborn to a fault and will have arguments that span weeks, though they also are kind and want to help others at heart. They both enjoy researching and experimenting with various spells, potions, and devices, especially the ones that go *boom*.

Shared Secrets

They have kept knowledge of more than a few lab accidents in their time and will cover for each other no-questions-asked so long as they get an explanation later. Lasair has shared her sexuality with Raonull as well as stories about her various "conquests". Raonull has shared some of his past, specifically that he was once a Claret, but was caught concealing his talents and was kicked from the order.

Legal Status

Master and Apprentice

Wealth & Financial state

His shop makes enough money to keep itself afloat, and his other funds come from grants from the College and Mage's Guild for his research. He doesn't spend his money on much other than materials, upkeep of his shop, food, and supplies for Lasair's projects.   He would be considered low-class based on his disposable income, but because of his status as an incredibly skilled Magecrafter, is considered to be middle-class.   He also receives money from his pension with the Clarets, which he saves or spends on gifts for his friends.
