Konaïs Settlement in Asharith | World Anvil

Konaïs

The largest city in the world. Konaïs is a testament to the power of knowledge, both of the arcane and in general. Not only does it boast the most prestigious magical academy in the entire world, it is also home to the great Opulan Council, a (mostly) democratically elected government where each member is a representative of one of the Opluan Republic's cities. The Adamant Archive and the Cathedralis Supra are another two of Konaïs' great wonders, both the center of research and the center of divine worship on Opula.   It was founded quite close after the end of the War of Great Ruin, when four powerful people came together to establish the first sanctuary in the world ever since the destruction of most civilisations. Saralinde Rovard also known as "The Last Queen," used her skills in diplomacy and of course her family name to allow for this new realm to be established with legitimacy. There was Florianus Aurelius, "The Resurrector," who established the first foothold of the clergy on Asharith in hundreds of years. Then Roban Jaybird, who used his extensive archive of knowledge he had preserved throughout the War to aid in the construction of the city and the foothold of what would eventually become the Adamant Archive. Lastly there was Merlonn Grimm, the only one of these four to survive to this day and also the oldest living mortal. He used his gifts granted to him by Galdur, The Architect Arcane to aid the city in its early days. Almost singlehandedly fending off any of the Infra's remaining forces that attempted to stop their efforts. He established the Weavers Guild, who are still present in the city to this day, though they have a less influential role now than they did then. Lastly he, of course, began construction on the greatest arcane academy the world has ever known, the Opal Academy. Merlonn still sits on the council, alongside the successors of his former allies and together with the elected Constituents, the "Vox Cognit" has ruled over the city for hundreds of years.

Demographics

You can find people from all over the world in Konaïs, the Cathedralis Supra, Adamant Archive and Opal Academy draw tourists and students from all over the world, many of which decide to move straight to the city to make use of their services. Besides the most common mortal races, there are also some less commonly found peoples who are free to live in the city, such as Goblins, Kobolds, Centaurs, Minotaurs, Bugbears and many more. The Opulan Council sees all people as equals when it comes to morality, until they are proven to have done something (or are proven to be planning to do something) evil, they are not to be treated worse than anyone else.

Districts

The Highreach

Located at the eastern coastal edge of the city, atop a set of high cliffs is the capital keep known as the "Brain" of the city. Here lives the royal "Rovard" family and here is also where the Opulan Council comes together for meetings and important votes. Surrounding the keep are houses of the more important members of the council, who are given these homes by the state. Access to the Highreach for the regular population is limited unless you have an endorsement from any of the council members.

The Galdurian Way

Located near the western edge of the city, The Galdurian Way is named that for containing the great Opal Academy. The Academy itself is as large as two or three villages combined, boasting multiple large buildings for teaching almost every type of arcane magic available to mortals. Surrounding the academy are a selection of smaller book stores and taverns, built for the students during their after-school time.

The Eyes

Located near the northern edge of the city, the Eyes is named that for its connection to Konn'Aïser, The All-Knowing, who is also the namesake of the entire city. The All-Knowing is the God of knowledge, and where else is this domain represented more than in the Adamant Archive. The Archive stands tall above most of the city, a large column filled with nothing but books. The surrounding buildings are mostly houses, small taverns and parks for people to read in.

The Diamond Road

Located near the southron edge of the city, the Diamond Road is home to the Cathedralis Supra, the largest clerical building in the world. It is a testament to the power of the clergy and their potent belief in the Gods of the Adamantine. The Diamond Road has also become the home of a sister location to the Opal Academy, teaching divine magic instead of arcane, known as the Adamant Academy.

The Slums

Located south of the Diamond Road, the slums are where both the poor and refugees from outside the city often find themselves. Many efforts are made by the royal family and organisations such as the the Opal Academy and the the Cathedralis Supra to reduce the amount of poverty within the city, though it seems the more the city grows, the more people come to it trying to find fortune, only to end up in the slums.
