Everinking Pen Item in Aren | World Anvil

Everinking Pen

Everinking Pens, as the name suggests, are pens which never run out of ink. Crafted by the Dwarves of Hemidar, each pen is unique, made with exceptional care. The pens are magical in nature and require attunement in order to work properly.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Composed of both magic and intricte bronze gears, springs, and cogs, everinking pens are complex and delicate items. The inner machinery works to activate magic which has been scribed into the metal within tiny runes; casting a modified version of "create water", which instead creates ink. The machinery activates automagically each time the pen runs low on ink, with the effect being that an everinking pen is, essentially, never-emptying.

Manufacturing process

Each everinking pen must be crafted by hand, with extraordinary attention poured into each of the tiny gears and cogs which make up the interior machinery. Every piece must be inscribed with runes just barely large enough to see, then assembled in the correct order while pouring magic into each rune.

Significance

Most pens are built by young dwarves pursuing their masteries in metalwork, artificing, or both. As such, the creation of an everinking pen is seen as something of a milestone among the dwarves. Outside of the community, everinking pens have come to be something of a status symbol, because each pen represents a signifigant effort on the part of its creator. Each pen is quickly sold or gifted to the rich and favoured.
