Personal history

Burl's Mother's family was a part of a nomadic tribe, traveling throughout Ardmair to feed their herds. The nomadic tribe where peaceful people, yet wary of the dangers of the wilds which their rangers protected them from.   However the wilderness was not their only threat, Warbands of Orcs were pushing south from the mountains and one fateful night they attacked Burl's nomad camp. The Hunters and Rangers fought valiantly, but the dangers of the forest paled in comparison to metal axes and Orkish fury, and so predator became prey.   Burl's Mother, Flora, was left for dead, next to the bodies of her husband and son. Even though she was barely clinging on to life, she was one of the few to survive the disaster. Over the next months the tribe and Flora recovered from the brutal attack. In those months, it also became apparent that Flora was Pregnant. She was overjoyed at this. She had been devastated at the loss of her only child. But when she delivered the babe, everyone was shocked. She had given birth to a Half-Orc.   It was no mystery as to how this could happen. The Chief and the Tribe Elders wanted Flora to abandon the child, for it was the spawn of evil and a stark reminder of the murder of so many relatives, but Flora refused to do so: she had already lost a son, she would not give up another. And so, she raised Burl as if he were a human boy.   Raising Burl was an unending struggle for Flora, without the support of the other nomads she had to devote all her time to their survival, but her undying love for the boy made her strong. Burl's childhood was equally harsh: he had no friends, the other children feared and mocked him for his Orkish blood. Instead Burl found company with the sheep and goats that the tribe reared, who didn't judge so long as you treated them right, yet the strongest bond he had was with his mother. Determined to give her son as great a shot at life as possible, she taught him many things such as the Halfling language, because the tribe often traded with nomadic halfling tribes, and how to play the drums, which he very much enjoyed.   As he got older, he wanted to join the tribe's hunters so that his Orkish physique may earn respect from those who would shun him. He was reluctantly accepted, learned many new skills from them. Flora also wanted him to learn the Orc language. She knew that he would leave the tribe one day and she wanted him to be prepared for anything the future might present him. So she traded for scripts written in Orc, mainly books attempting to translate Orcish writing (a difficult task due to Orcs' messy approach to writing and utter disregard of paper), for him to learn from. Burl despised the mere concept of Orcs for how they had brought him misfortune his whole life, yet he trusted his mother more than anyone, so he learned their language.   One day Burl went hunting in the Southern Woods, as he had done for years when the tribe was passing through the area. He had been tracking was tracking a herd of deer for the past couple days when, upon skirting around the base of a cliff, he saw that something had caught them first, a great brown bear was feasting on a large buck not 5 meters away. The territorial bear turned and attacked Burl on sight to defend its meal. After an epic bout of bear-wrestling he bested it, taking its fangs and claws as a trophy, he carried the rest of the buck back to camp.   He returned to find his nomad's camp ablaze, Orcs were raiding it for a second time. At the sight of the people he had worked so hard to gain the respect of being slaughtered, Burl lost all self control. He grabbed the greataxe of a fallen Orc and plowed into the raiders with the fury of the damned, and did not cease his assault until the only greenskinned figure left standing was his own wreteched self.   Burl then went to gingerly check his mother's tent, but as he feared she did not survive the Orcs this time. He used the last of his strength to bury her and slept beside her grave. The next few days Burl helped the survivors as best he could, but it was clear that he was more unwelcome than he had ever been. And so he had decided to wander the world alone, in trading his mother's animals and goods for supplies he gave away his last connections with the nomads he grew up with anymore.   After aiding Zeke Greywood (PC) and his companions in the events at Taag Brosin , Burl fled the city in fear of getting arrested for the murder of Baron Lone . Looking to earn some money before setting off to whatever he planed next, he went to a nearby village. When he first arrived there, he was greeted with wary glances and people whispering behind his back. But after a view weeks the people got used to seeing the Half-Orc. Once the people more or less accepted him, he was offered some work by a farmer (and his young son). And so, Burl started working for shelter, some food and a small salary. Even though he and the farmer exchanged only few words, the got along very well.   As the days and weeks went on, he started to forget, that he hadn’t planned on staying for long. It was good, honest work and he enjoyed working around the farm and with the animals. And so the years went by...
