The Vengeful Goose Inn

Purpose / Function

The original purpose of the inn was to provide a place for farmers who had come to trade wares and news to spend the night. It also provided a similar service for the occasional travelling peddler or trader. For a few coins, or more often some barter the customer could have a warm meal, a good drink, and a warm dry place to sleep. Over the years the Vengeful Goose has grown larger and added more services, but its original purpose stands; to offer the weary traveler a good meal, drink, and a warm bed.

Alterations

The original building was a hall with a fireplace, a stable, and a lean-to kitchen in the back. Since then, it has undergone many alterations the hall has grown much larger, nearly thrice the size of the original. A proper kitchen has been added and a stone cellar was dug to provide storage. A second floor was added with private rooms for the more affluent traveler, a half dozen private eating rooms have also been added. The stables have been expanded and a walled courtyard was added to the front of the inn with gates that can be closed at night. The current owner, Willihad Ucahhen, is planning to add a third story of private rooms and is currently in negotiations with the elves of Tatidär to purchase a ship the necessary lumber.

Architecture

The Vengeful Goose is a rarity in Ucahhen as it is constructed entirely of stone and wood. The first floor is almost all river stones and clay with stout wooden beams. The second floor is all wood, as is the stables. The roof, originally covered with wood shingles was one of the first in Ucahhen to switch to clay shingles and is sloped with gutters and small gargoyles. The stable, is constructed primarily of wood, though parts of the outer walls are constructed of stone. The wall that surrounds the courtyard is constructed of gneiss blocks.

Defenses

All of the outer walls, including those of the inn, stables, and courtyard wall are constructed of gneiss stone blocks from the nearby quarry. The doors are thick wood, banded with iron. The outer walls are all at least a foot thick and ten feet high and kept smooth with cracks and chips repaired regularly.

History

The bluffs overlooking the Nahe river had been a gathering spot of farmers from the region for several years. They would come to trade and catch up on news and gossip. A few had even built small huts to spend the night in. Ucahhen auf Läwlad saw an opportunity and with the help of a handful of men built a small inn and tavern there. He named it the Vengeful Goose after and incident from his childhood. Over the years a small thorp grew up around the inn, as craftsmen came to ply their trades, and traders came from other Klarland communities to buy and sell. Even the tyrant Baasch family mostly left the inn and it's owners alone, being smart enough to realize that the inn was the cornerstone of commerce in the village. When the Baasch were deposed and Adelais Schräder took power, she allowed and encouraged the owner to expand his business. The inn has thrived ever since as the oldest building in Ucahhen.
