Lake Kleinalt (lāk klīn ält)

Located south and east of lake Süshasser lake, lake Kleinalt was once a part of it as evidenced by the patches of boggy land in between the two lakes. The lake is home to an ancient and gigantic dragon turtle which collects knowledge and will sometimes part with it for a price. The lake is also rumored to be the resting place of a pre-Iliosgy temple that houses a great secret. What the secret is, is a mystery as is the truth about the existence of the temple as the dragon turtle doesn’t permit anyone to sail on the lake.

Geography

The lake sits in a low-lying area of the south Frontier Lands, the lake itself is surrounded by marshes with most of the shore unreachable directly due to the wetlands surrounding it. The lake itself is fifty miles long at its longest and forty miles wide at its widest. It’s believed to be fairly shallow with an average depth of around 60 feet and only 200 feet deep at its deepest.

Ecosystem

Located in the subtropics, the lake doesn’t go through the seasonal changes like the more northern reaches of the Frontier Lands, instead being characterized by hot summers with mild winters and infrequent frosts. Consequently, plants grow year-round, and the lifeforms of the lake are adapted to that. Even during the rare frosts, the lake water seldom gets cold allowing for the constant growth of various water plants. This growth in turn feeds numerous herbivorous life forms who in turn feed the carnivorous life forms.

Fauna & Flora

Among the numerous species of plants are agave, aloe vera, alstroemeria, anthurium, begonia, bird of paradise, bougainvillea, bromeliads, caladium, canna, clivia, cobra lily, coleus, dahlia, echeveria, elephant ear, fern, fuchsia, ginger, gladiolus, heliconia, medinilla, pentas, and salvia are found along the shore and growing lushly on the islands. The marshes surrounding the lake are full of cattails, reeds, and sedges.

Numerous animal species inhabit the lake, of particular note are giant otter.s Also found in its depths are anacondas and caimans as well as numerous species of turtles. Innumerable species of fish dwell in the lake from the giant arapaima which can grow to a length of fifteen feet to tiny guppies that form large schools. Large numbers of waterfowl inhabit the shores of the lake, including migratory geese in the winter.

Natural Resources

It’s unknown what resources the lake holds as the dragon turtle that claims the lake as its territory allows no one to explore the lake.

History

History of this lake is shrouded in mystery. The dragon turtle was reputedly large for his kind during the time of the Iliosgy so they largely avoided the lake. Since then the dragon turtle has discouraged anyone from getting close and exploring.
