Brorskap av Aske (bôr skăp äv äs kə)

Structure

The Brorskap av Aske is divided into three branches, the healere, the beskyttere, and the teknikere. Each of the branches has three ranks, roughly corresponding to the guild system of apprentice, journeyman and master. The healere are called sjaman, lege, and mestre lege. The beskyttere are labelled kampfly, kriger, and spydbror. The teknikere are named assistant, pedagog, and oppsynsmann. The healere are tasked with tending to the people and their environment. They are medicine men and farmers. The beskyttere are guardians and protectors, the fighting arm of the Borskap av Aske. The teknikere are the holders of wisdom responsible for passing that wisdom on to others.

Culture

The Borskap av Aske believe that everything has a spirit, and that these spirits should alternatively be thanked and placated as the case may be. Spirits range in size from the small spirits that inhabit pebbles and blades of grass to the gods themselves. The brotherhood believes it is the duty of humanity to tend the world around them, taking what they need, and giving thanks for what they receive, to protect the land from those who would despoil it and to pass on their knowledge to the next generation.

Public Agenda

The Brorskap av Aske is dedicated to preserving the ways of the Manneskor peoples and seeing that those ways are passed down to each generation. Initially formed in response to the powerful Iliosgy Empire, they saw many of their youths seduced by the ways of the Iliosgy and abandoning their heritage. The brotherhood was formed by elders of the various Manneskor peoples to ensure that their ways did not die out. With the collapse of the Iliosgy Empire the brotherhood felt vindicated in their goals. When the Mangen people began colonizing the Frontier Lands the brotherhood saw history repeating itself, and shifted once again into an active stance, where they openly denounce the ways of the Mangen as decadent and weak, and praise the ways of the Manneskor and encourage their youth to follow in the footsteps of their ancestors.

Assets

Many of the members of the brotherhood are elders and highly respected by the Manneskor people. They are supported in their efforts by many high-status people amongst the Manneskor. Because of this the brotherhood can command a great deal of resources when the necessity arises. This is in addition to the resources owned by the members of the brotherhood which is considerable in its own right.

History

As the Iliosgy culture was on the rise many of the Manneskor youth were seduced by the luxuries and easy way of life possessed by the Iliosgy. Many of the elders of the Manneskor were concerned that their culture and way of life would be subsumed by the Iliosgy culture which they saw as decadent and weak. A council of elders was held with representatives from all the Manneskor people, for the first time in their history. The elders met for the length of Kuu’s cycle to discuss the problem and an idea was formed. The elders formed a brotherhood that would be tasked with ensuring the continuance of Manneskor culture. They named it for their brotherhood for the ash tree, which is seen as a symbol of rebirth amongst other things.

The brotherhood would be divided into three branches. One branch would be tasked with the preservation of Manneskor lands and people. One branch would be tasked with defending the the Manneskor people and lands. One branch would be tasked with teaching the youths of the Manneskor their heritage. For nearly 2000 years they did their best to encourage the Menneskor to embrace their culture by glorifying the ways of the Manneskor and painting the Iliosgy as decadent and weak.

When the Year of Ruin fell the brotherhood felt they had been vindicated. They pointed to the destruction of the Iliosgy as proof of the superiority of the Manneskor culture. For the next millennia they continued in their ways, but in a more passive manner. Content to pass on their knowledge and protect the Manneskor people. Then the Mangen people began to arrive.

The brotherhood saw in the Mangen the same threat to their people as the Iliosgy. They began to actively discourage the Manneskor from adopting the ways of the Mangen. They portrayed the Mangen as weak and decadent, just as the Iliosgy pointing to what happened to the Illiosgy as proof. They encouraged the youths not to trade with the Mangen, but to raid them and take what they wanted. They encouraged a certain level of enmity between the Manneskor and Mangen. While not always successful, they have gained many adherents amongst their people who believe in their mission.
