Starships

Starships are the most widely used spacefaring vessels. The Vishith were the first to perfect long term space travel technology, but it still took over a century for ships to become specialized into starships and airships, each better able to meet the needs of their respective flying conditions. Starships can travel through space, unlike aircraft, while being much less expensive than combination ships that travel within an atmosphere and in outer space. This makes them extremely valuable for interplanetary travel and cargo transport. They are the preferred vessel for long term space travel and short trips between planets alike.   Starships are constructed on space stations, with materials often brought in from mined asteroids and the like. As such, they never have to cross an atmosphere and aren't designed to do so. It also keeps down cost of production, making starships more affordable for the average traveler. Starships typically dock at an orbital station around a planet, then passengers and cargo are transported to the planetary surface by puddle jumpers or other specialized aircraft.   Being designed exclusively for travel through space, they have no need for aerodynamic considerations, and some have outlandish designs as a result. Some of the most extreme examples don't resemble ships at all. A few famous examples include the Stellar Drake, which looks like a mechanical lizard-like dragon, and the Mace, which looks exactly like the kind of spiked ball you'd expect it to look like. These particular examples are used for entertainment purposes, but they are completely functional as well.   Some starships are equipped to land on a planet surface, but as they are not combination ships, they cannot make it through entry into an atmosphere. Instead, they are used primarily by mining corps for going to and from mining colonies on planets with no docking station or atmosphere.
