Iphigea
Iphigea is the name used to refer to the loose confederacy of city states spread across the Iphigean Islands.
Although Iphigea has never been a unified nation, and in fact one or more of the city states are usually at war with one another they all acknowledge they share a common culture, and can thus be referred to by the Pan Iphigean name.
There are numerous smaller alliances and confederations within the Iphigean Islands, the most powerful being the Achaean League based around the mighty city state of Mycenae.
Structure
Iphigea is the name of the loose affiliation of city states based within the Iphigean Islands.
Military
Iphigean culture is quite militaristic and it is expected that in a time of war that most able-bodied men in a city state will serve in a militia. As such the general level of military training amongst ordinary citizens is high. In addition to these militias some city states also maintain standing armies. Most notably the fearsome Laconians.
Religion
The Iphigean Pantheon is a wide ranging suite of deities few of which are worshipped on every island, but all of whom in their diversity have their own followers and temples. The most powerful and widely worshiped of these deities are the twelve Olympians; Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Hades, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Ares, Athena, Apollo, Artemis and Dionysus.
Foreign Relations
The City States of the Iphigean Islands are more likely to trouble each other than anyone further afield. Although they have had contact with the Mainland in the past that relationship was due to Neyris's century of Isolationism cutting off easy contact between the Mainland and the Archipelago.
Agriculture & Industry
Agriculture and mining are important industries in Iphigea. Though rare Adamantium is found in several places in Iphigea, and is highly prized. It is also one of the only places in the known world where the incredibly rare metal Orichalcum can be found. Owing to it being a notably good conductor for magic Orichalcum is primarily used to create powerful magical weapons which are highly prized in Iphigea.
Trade & Transport
Trade and transport are almost universally carried out by sea in Iphigea. This creates difficulties as sea transportation is known to be highly subject to the whims of the Gods in the Iphigean Archipelago. As a result while it is important for an individual to maintain the favour of the Gods for their own wellbeing, it is absolutely critical for Iphigean Kings to do so. Angering a God or Goddess could cripple a City State's ability to trade with others.
