Doctor Bilillybell Krough

Doctor Bilillybell Krough (a.k.a. Dr. Crow/The Cheirugimancer)

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Stands only 3”1 and most of it skin and bone. Between this skinny frame and the spiky flare of grey hair on her head she resembles nothing more than a stern grandmother dandelion. Just as her hair has been prematurely greyed her face is covered in lines and wrinkles, relics of a lifetime scowling at patients who didn’t know what was good for them. She has a formidable scowl, helped by the prominent aquiline nose that seems to aim it right at you, and the crystal blue eyes that stare at you like lenses of ice. A pair of pince nez often sit upon that nose when she needs to do a proper job of staring but that is usually the only adornment she wears. There are no rings upon her fingers or in her pointed ears. She has no necklaces but does have a work belt, made of well-crafted leather with a multitude of pouches and holsters for containing useful things. Her attire otherwise tends to be influenced by her medical career so is usually white to better reveal stains. However she has lately been affected by her adventuring career, where stains are an inescapable constant, so has taken to wearing a long black coat. Weighs about 43 pounds (though probably less without all her gear) and has reached the ripe old age of 238.

Personal history

Gnomes are well known for having strong fascinations. Funny little things that they obsess themselves with and pour over. And Bilillybell’s fascination was bodies. She’d grown up on a farm, with her father and seven older brothers tending the animals while she got to watch. And the way everything just…worked. They way all the squiggly bits inside creatures had a purpose and synchronised with all the other squiggly bits. An organic system better than any clockwork the rock gnomes could produce. So when she came of age her family petitioned every school they could reach to accept her on as a medical student, for surely someone with her level of raw enthusiasm couldn’t not become a master physician? Fortunately, a nearby university agreed, and Bilillybell on with a full scholarship. It was a decision she never made them regret, as enthusiasm became skill like tempering iron into steel. From student to physician, from physician to doctor. And she had ideas about being a professor, but the question was what should she profess? That would require some…independent study. For in her career Bilillybell had hit upon a question she had been unable to find an answer to (anathema to an inquiring mind like hers): what applications could necromancy have within the healing arts? It was a question she had been pondering for years. Could necromancy’s power to resurrect be used instead to resuscitate? Could its power over flesh be used not to wither and decay but to heal and rejuvenate? Could its destructive energies be used to rout infections and parasites? She talked about it with the university’s Board, who agreed that she could take up the darkest art as a side project and teach it if her studies yielded acceptable results. The only condition was that she not allow anyone to find out what she was doing, not until she had enough evidence to make necromancy more…palatable to the masses. And so began the project. Of course rumours started to fly about what Bilillybell was up to, and it was around these years that people went from pronouncing her surname from the proper “Krau” (rhyming with plough), to the more ominous “Crow”. It started as a joke among the students that quickly spread and she got tired of correcting. For her part, she claimed that her wizardry was simply a sampling from various different schools, a mix of magics she was hoping to turn into a new school of discipline she dubbed “Cheirugimancy” And she would have gotten away with it if her curiosity hadn’t gotten the better of her. A patient, a local butcher, was brought in one day suffering from an ailment no-one could identify. Some terrifyingly potent disease or deadly poison was killing him faster than any doctor could treat him. Bilillybell was one of the many who tried in vain to save him…but she couldn’t let it rest there. Perhaps it was the old gnomish fascination kicking up again, perhaps it was an attempt to do right going wrong, but she used necromancy to attempt to raise the patient…and was caught doing so. She tried to explain herself, that she only wanted to find out more about the ailment, how to detect it, how it could have spread, how it might be caused and treated. What if it were in tainted meat and the butcher had unwittingly sold death to all his customers? But her excuses fell on deaf ears. She had been given one condition and had broken it, the university couldn’t keep hold of its reputation if it allowed a known necromancer to linger within its ranks. They had to dismiss her or who knew what manner of repercussions would befall them? And so Bilillybell was somewhat unceremoniously evicted from her favourite home, forced to take on the wandering life of an adventurer to make her living…and continue her studies

History

Howl has a complex relationship with Bilillybell, whether she knows it or not. He has an innate nervousness about magic users, but he also has a great respect for anyone he deems to be learned. As a result Howl's instinct is to trust Bilillybell's judgement above his own, even though she almost set him on fire that one time. Over the time they have known each other he has also come to trust her moral compass, despite the fact that she has dabbled in necromancy. Her distaste for violence and desire to heal harm has convinced him of her noble intentions.
