Avris
The importance of Avris lies not in what it is but where it is. It rests in a deep and sheltered part of the ocean that lies close to the mainland continent. For centuries this has made a useful trading point; smaller boats can reach it from the continent without braving the rage of the open ocean, and larger boats can reach it from the archipelago without risking the rocks and reefs of the mainland. Though having little to trade itself, the island was an invaluable point of contact for trade between the mainland and archipelago and has thus constantly attracted attention from every major power in the area. The island has changed hands between kingdoms, empires and warlords more frequently than any other, all of them using it as a spearhead for their expansions. It has a not undeserved reputation as a somewhat lawless place, as the constant shifts in regime have left any attempt at properly policing the island stunted and fractious, with really the only law enforcement generally relegated to the capital city of Port Imperial.
The kingdom of Auland currently owns Avris, having recently conquered it and installed loyalists as the Administrator and garrisoning forces. It is seen as a source of revenue, taxes from trade bringing in a steady stream of coin, as Auland's eyes are still turned on mainland expansion. This has left Avris right on the edge of civilisation, just as much a frontier as it has always been
