The Wind Obelisk
The Empyrean Forest is massive and wild and easy to get lost in. The one road that winds through the forest is a vulnerable target for bandits and is heavily overgrown anyway. Without the ruins of the Wind Obelisk, making one's way through the forest would be ten times as hard.
Purpose / Function
Now stands as a marker for those crossing through the Empyrean Forest to track where they are. Soaring three hundred feet above the ground and easily spotted from the road and the entire northern part of the forest, travelers can note where it points to navigate. The Obelisk also produces sound, and on an extremely cloudy or foggy day, can be located that way.
Architecture
The Obelisk is built from the very bright white Archstone that makes up a lot of the ground deep underneath the forest. It is very plain and smooth and just a simple rectangular pillar jutting up into the sky. Near the top of the obelisk it is bored through with a unique patterning of holes. Wind almost constantly blows through these holes, making a chorus of notes that reach far over the forest.
History
Previously the Obelisk was used as a clock by the ancient Cirae civilization, but despite intense study of those peoples, not much is known about them, particularly about this massive structure. The shadow of the Obelisk was used to measure time, and the pattern of holes closely matches with some constellations, but why the wind-fueled music? The Cirae are still a mystery.
Travelers had been using the monument to track their whereabouts for decades before a cartographer by the name of Buvil from the college in Camnhir made note of its use in official maps. Now, although passing through the Empyrean Forest is no less dangerous, it is more straightforward.
