Kingdom of Anduril

The kingdom to the East of the main continent of Alathor, bordering with Belledance to the West and the Great Desert (formerly the Kingdom of Eos) to the South. It derives its name from Anduril Vasari, the first man to conquer these wild lands and unite the previously warring lords into a singular state.

Structure

The King (or, rarely, Queen) is the ruling monarch, the unquestionable head of state and the one that makes the final decisions concerning governance. Though officially in charge of the entirely of the Kingdom, the royal family does not directly command any land themselves, governing from the Mater Fortress. Instead, the land of Anduril is divided into four Districts, each watched over by one of the four Archdukes, who report to the King and are sworn to support them in all things. Under the Archdukes are the Dukes, and under them are the Barons, the Marquis', and other lesser nobles granted land by the Dukes. Each land-owning noble makes decisions concerning their land themselves, though they are keenly aware that the higher instances are always watching and must be reported to.

Demography and Population

Humans constitute the majority of the population, with halfling and half-elves being the second-most numerous. Elves are also common in both cities and roaming the wild areas of the nation, though they are considered second-rate citizens and are rarely fully counted as part of population surveys, making their exact number difficult to pinpoint. Half-orcs and gnomes are also relatively common. Many dwarves are encountered as merchants, though the vast majority of them still lives in their underground kingdoms. Other notable races include tieflings and aasimar, who are both uncommon, and goliath, who are typically only found in the mountains and rarely descend down into Anduril proper.

Territories

Anduril spans a large section of the Eastern side of the continent, from the Dragonspire Peaks all the way to the Red Ocean. The Kingdom is divided into four Districts: Roer, Lohengrin, Valflame, and Nortia. Within these territories are many smaller sub-divisions between the various ruling lords. Anduril also officially has claim to Caliper Island to the South-West and the Icelandic Vanguard to the North. The collection of islands that house the Alabaster Fortress are located within Anduril's territory but are commanded by the Divine Order of Alabaster Knights.

Roer District

The largest and most densely populated district, as well as the most agriculturally abundant. Between the vast trees of the Cassapia Forest and the large amount of fertile farmland, it is the district that produces the most of the Kingdom's crops and lumber, both internally and for export. Many of the settlements here rely either on farming or lumber for their income. Fishing is also important for settlements on the coast of the Red Ocean, though it is less prevalent here than in Lohengrin. The southern border with the Great Desert has lost much of its agricultural potential, and has instead turned to other pursuits.

Lohengrin District

The district to the North-East is made up largely of marshland and swamps, with many rivers and beaches. Despite its northern location, Lohengrin has a very warm, humid climate that makes it perfect for growing certain crops that require large amounts of water, such as watermelon and rice. The district's main export, however, is fish and other seafood, caught and reared in along the coastline. The cold water from Balares Ocean mixes with the warn water from the Red Ocean, producing a unique environment that allows sea life to thrive. Lohengrin is also known for their fine arts and entertainment.

Lohengrin Settlements:
  • Cities: Atisha'ad (district capital), Arianrhod, Lamarre, Tangram, Bonemire

Valflame District

Located to the South-West, Valflame's territory is largely consumed by the Dragonspire Peaks, which led to some settlements (including the district capital) being built either directly into the mountain or at its base. Mining for minerals and ores is abundant in this district, serving as its main product for trade. Some fishing occurs along the Ancient Sea, though it is more abundant in coral and pearls than in actual fish. A lot of dwarven products are available in this district, as well as having some of the finest smiths in the Kingdom.
Valflame Settlements:
  • Cities: Jormungandr (district capital), Abysshilde, Riordine, Avengarde
  • Towns: Ulster, Lionhall, Sheelin, Eisengard
  • Villages: Broekhin, Zaanstad, Asenray, Ironforge
  • Hamlets: Visliet, Freya, Platoise, Sauthune

Nortia District

The smallest and coldest district of the Kingdom, with limited agricultural capacity due to its harsher climates. Its proximity to the Dragonspire Peaks allows for some mining to happen here, though the mines are much less abundant than in Valflame. Dreichels Forest, which takes up a significant amount of the district's territory, provides unique kinds of lumber and plants not found anywhere else in the Kingdom. Many settlements survive through hunting and trading of monster materials. Many are members of the military - Nortia boasts the highest level of military might and serves as the northern frontier against assaults. Their close proximity to the Alabaster Fortress makes Nortia a central point for people of faith.
Nortia Settlements:
  • Cities: Testa Rosa (district capital), Jurai City, El Drago
  • Towns: Bear Glade, Legram, Yuenwood,
  • Villages: Ymir, Swiftfalls, Carlisle, Glossop, Arkaley
  • Hamlets: Alcombey, Whitead, Garren's Well
  • Outposts: Feygate, Black Hollow
Other Known Territories: Caliper Island, Icelandic Vanguard

Military

The Anduril Military is the official standing army of the nation. They are under the command of the King, as well as various Generals. In peaceful times, a section of the military force serves as the city guard, patrolling the main roads and guarding the entrances to larger settlements. The Vasari Elite Guard is a smaller, elite-trained section of soldiers that dedicate their lives to protecting the capital and the royal family, headed by the Royal Shield, a member of the Nightgard family. Each individual settlement sometimes has a city (or town) watch to guard against threats and deal with crime within the settlement.

Foreign Relations

After many years of warfare, Anduril is at a tentative episode of peace with the Belledance Empire due to the signing of the peace treaty between King Gabriel Vasari IV and Empress Valenra of Belledance. Though tensions are still high between both parties, the threat of another war breaking out has been reduced, for now.   Anduril is allied with the Calvard Collective and Jurai Province. They maintain neutrality with Altair and Valiant. The ever-present threat of invasion from the steadily expanding Bryonian Empire has caused the nation's leaders to consider other alliances beyond their established connections.

Peace Treaty

Anduril and Belledance have a long and bloody history. Many of the former Warring Lords that once ruled of the land that now comprises Anduril were criminals or otherwise migrants from Belledance, who fled across the mountain range to escape a sentence or to seek better opportunities away from the Grand Game. As such, Belledance has always considered the Stolen Lands to belong to them by right. When Anduril Vasari claimed and united the lands, forming them into the Kingdom of Anduril, the Emperor of Belledance attempted to enact his claim on the land, only to be bluntly and forcefully rebuked by the new King. This led to tension that only increased as skirmishes became more and more frequent. There were also frequent disputes between the nobility of the two nations, accusations of espionage, and even several instances of people claiming that one side was responsible for the untimely death of the other side's rulers. Though such claims were never proven, speculation continues to abound to this day.   The tensions came to a head in the year 1007 P.A., when Emperor Lav'anshe launched a full-scale attack on Anduril. Belledance won that war and claimed Anduril as part of its land, including publicly executing the King and all related to him in an attempt to end the royal lineage. They failed, however, and in the year 1027, the then-young Prince Gabriel Vasari led his people in the rebellion that was later called the War of the Lions. Anduril reclaimed its independence, however many losses were counted on both sides, leading to increased hostility from both sides.   Since the ascension of Empress Valendra of Orlais 16 years ago, Belledance and Anduril have been at a tentative state of peace. Through the efforts of both monarchs, a small degree of cooperation between the two has begun to bloom, though it is greatly hindered by the attitudes of the people of both nations.   Belledians find Andurilites to be barbaric and simplistic, almost primitive in their nature and way of life. The fact that Anduril occupies lands that - they believe - belong rightfully to Belledance upsets many a Belldian noble and official. Many believe that Andurilites need to simply submit to their betters like dogs should, instead of running around like wild barbarians.   Andurilites, meanwhile, believes Belledians to be stuck-up and pompous, too lost in their Game to see the clear picture. Everyone remembers the losses suffered in the Belledance Occupation and again in the War of the Lions, and the fact that King Gabriel - the one that led the rebellion against their tyranny in the first place - chooses to cooperate with them now has led some to suspect foul play. The Empress' young age and attractiveness, coupled with the ailing state of the King's wife has led to speculation of an affair between the two, causing many to doubt the King's intentions.
