Jackalopes

A species which emerged several decades after humanity appeared. They are descendants of an "old-world" species carrying a unique virus that causes rapid cellular growths, primarily manifesting as horn-like protrusions. Due to a rapid reproduction rate, several adaptive mutations occurred within its lineage, resulting in its modern appearance. Most notable is how the viral infection evolved into symbiosis, with the growths forming hardened, defensive spikes on the body and head, avoiding sensitive areas which would inhibit the animal's lifestyle.
