The Conflict
Prelude
A want for independence vs. a greedy nation. The nation wants access to the plains and the mountains extending beyond them. Also want control over the plains people. The plains people just want to have the steppe to themselves and not have settlers infringing on their land. Kill anyone who tries to settle it.
Deployment
All young men and women are expected to serve. A militaristic society supports the war. Anton is sent to the front lines to lead a new campaign.
Battlefield
The eastern steppe- dry, cold grasslands.
Conditions
Dry and cold. Snowstorms and wind are common, lots of food for horses but not much for anyone else. Pretty miserable.
Outcome
they are able to band together to fight the invaders. destruction of a lot of land.

To capture the steppes, allow their people to settle there, and control the steppe people. Gain access to the mountains and the pass.
To keep their freedom and to keep settlers off their land.
