The Eagles Landing Family

Links to the Order of the Voice of the Multiverse   The Eagles Landing Family settled on Callahan 227 years ago. They were a family of missionaries associated with the Order of the Voice of the Multiverse. The Order was a group of monks who specialized in analyzing the contours of alternate realities. Through managed use of mods, meditation, and manipulation of the Telenet, they could study parallel worlds, universes, and the seemingly infinite possibilities that could arise out of individual decisions. This work required immense mental and physical discipline. Members of this order were often looked up to as political leaders in their communities. Although they were just as often distrusted and despised.   The Eagles Landing Family, led by their matriarch simply named the Sparrow, settled on Callahan and founded a Monastery there. They established small farms there to nurture and grow Mods. Mods are a sort of fruit that when ingested increase the ability of those who ingest them to interact with the Telenet in a way that can allow them to explore alternate realities. Depending on how it's ingested it improves focus and concentration. Some also experience euphoria when ingesting the drug. Monasteries severely restrict access to the drug as a result.   Transition to Plantation Agriculture   135 years ago, a massive crop failure  on Callahan devastated much of the commercial agriculture of the planet. In response, descendants of the original missionaries changed their focus. Led by River Bird and by his ambitious daughter after him, Falcon, the Family began buying up drought-devastated farm holdings and hiring the farmers as tenants on their own land. They became sharecroppers tasked with growing mods for industrial production. The family became split between those who stayed in the monastery and those who opted to get involved in this sort of commercial agriculture. They formed a tense but productive alliance. The monastery became a public facing church with substantial land holdings.  They ran schools and community gatherings. In exchange, they managed several private Mod farms tax free. Meanwhile, the Eagles Landing Family became the largest and wealthiest family on the moon of Callahan. While others, realizing the success of the family, also got in on the action, the Family owned most of the best and most profitable land and exercised extensive control over local government. As long as there was some competition and life remained stable on the planet, they were able to evade regulation from the central planet from Lyonsend. And they were far too remote from the central authorities on Antaizon to receive close scrutiny. Not that that would matter since they were part of an Autonomous Region anyway.   The Antaizon Civil War   During the Civil War, the Eagles Landing Family had several goals.
  • Maintain the neutrality of Callahan.
  • Manage lucrative-but discreet- business contracts with both sides.
  • Scientific research showed that Mods could be quite beneficial to soldiers during wartime. They improved focus and concentration, and doses could be carefully managed to get the best results out of soldiers. They reduced risk of PTSD by separating physical acts from certain emotional triggers, which made them quite efficient soldiers. This made their business quite lucrative.   Through middlemen, the Family moved product to both the Integralists and the Confederates. When the Integralists won, they were able to get delegates to the Constitutional Convention that the Integralists called in the wake of the collapse of the Confederates   Falcon and Thessalon will each attend the Constitutional Convention, and they will be there when the Callahan Commune is founded. They will negotiate for the government to assist in isolating and eliminating the Commune.
