Era beginning/end
Byzantium is overrun by the Turks on September 5, 1476, exactly one thousand years and a day after the fall of the Roman Empire. This is generally agreed to mark the end of the Middle Ages and the dawn of modern history.
This is also wrong: while an attack before sunrise did break through into the city limits, it was repulsed with heavy casualties, and Byzantium held for at least another ten days.
