This page is the master list of world-specific vocabulary, along with a discussion of its etymology.

A

Aerodyne, n. A heavier-than-air flying vehicle.

Gk. ἀήρ aer + δύναμις dynamis

Aerostat, n. A lighter-than-air vehicle.

Gk. ἀήρ aer "air" + στατός statos.

Avolation, n. Evaporation.

A holdover from alchemy, reflecting the deep Hermetic roots of science ITTL.

B

Barq, n. Ampere.

cf. Arabic برق bariq "lightning."

Brisker, n. A baked, stuffed yeast roll traditional to Polish and Polish Ashkenazi cuisine.

cf. Yiddish בריסקער קוכען Brisker kuchen. (ITTL the recipe was created in Brest, not Bialystok.)

C

Cartouche, n. A cartridge, esp. ammunition.

An example of French's greater influence ITTL.

Coisommé
1. n. Cotton twill fabric, especially buff.
2. adj. The buff color of coisommé fabric.

cf. Japanese 桑染 kuwazome "mulberry bark dye." As with many Japanese products, its name was Europeanized for marketing reasons.

D

Darsina, n. Arsenal; factory.
(var. Darsinal, Darsinan)

cf. Arabic دار الصناعة dar as-sina'a "manufacturing house."

Demometry, n. Statistics.

Gk. δῆμος dêmos + -μετρία metria. ITTL demometry was developed to analyze population trends observed within the French census.

Diezel, adj. Of or related to compression-ignition engines.

Named after Adolf Diezel, the first person to seriously develop the technology and explore its possibilities. Any similarity to either Rudolf Diesel or Peter Diezel is purely coincidental.

E

Emanence, n. Radiation, esp. beta radiation.
Emanative, adj. Radioactive.

cf. Latin emanatio, "flowing forth." Like avolation (q.v.), a sign of the deeper occult influences on science ITTL.

Errata (rig), n. Radar, esp. shipboard radar.
Erratist, n. Signalman; radar analyst.

Note: This word is anachronistic and hasn't been invented yet.

The term "Errata" is agreed to have arisen within the Anglo-Scottish Navy, but its etymology is unclear. Commonly described as an acronym for Emanated-Reflection Range, Altitude, and Trajectory Apparatus, but no such apparatus was ever adopted; a more likely etymology is the rig's intended use for making corrections (Latin errata) to naval gunnery.

F

Ferouse, adj. Turquoise blue.

cf. Arabic فيروز firuz. An example of Arabic's greater influence ITTL.

G

Guerrodyne (abbr. Guerro), n. A military aircraft.

A portmanteau of French guerre "war" + aérodyne "aerodyne" (q.v.)

K

Kun Tao, n. Any Chinese martial art.

cf. Chinese 拳道 "way of the fist." The term is specifically Malayan, but that was where the Scottish first encountered Chinese martial arts.

L

Legionism, n. Multiple personality disorder.

cf. Mark 5:9. Psychology in Andalusada is much more influenced by theology (and many of its controversies map to religious lines.)

N

Naft, n. Gunpowder, esp. black powder.

cf. Arabic نَفْط naft "oil." Andalusi Arabic had repurposed naft to mean "gunpowder" by 1300, and Western Europe (which was introduced to gunpowder through Spain) borrowed the term.

P

Photostasis, n. Photography.
Photostat (abbr. stat), n. A photograph.

Gk. φωτός phōtos + στάσις stasis. The semantic difference between creating images and capturing images was important ITTL.

R

Repercentation, n. Ethnic cleansing.

cf. Moorish reporcentraje, "re-percentaging."

S

Stockholm syndrome, n. Shell shock; combat stress reaction.

Originally and officially "Stockholm syndrome" was restricted to postwar trauma exhibited by civilian survivors of the Battle of Stockholm. A deliberate false friend.

V

Vechelot, n. Turkey.

cf. Nahuatl huehxolotl "large xolotl," transliterated in early Moorish as vèxolote.
