Personal history

Jon was barely a teenager when he began to apprentice with his town's wizard. Unfortunately, his ambition got the better of him and he broke the first rule of magic - do not mix magics. His attempt to use wizard magic in conjunction with both dragon magic and fairy magic brought him into a world of hurt. Instead of being temporarily stealthy, he became permanently unable to create any sound at all. (Jon can even shatter plates across the room in complete silence.)
In addition to being without sound, Jon became a constant magic drain. This mistake led to him being kicked out of town by his Master and seeking out a wizard in a neighboring village for help. The Master was unwilling to help him, but his Senior Apprentice Elias was willing to try. With Elias' friendship and ingenuity, the two discovered that they needed the help of a dragon to cure Jon.
Over the course of months or years, the silent boy gained enough rapport with the dragons to ask for their help; although the dragon magic was unable to give Jon the power of sound, the dragons instead made the silence permanent without the need for the constant use of magic.
It was at this point that Elias was truly able to train Jon in the use of magic. He became proficient in all areas, and his mastery of the here-to-there spell along with his absolute silence made him a popular figure among people with money. While Elias continued to learn more wizardry, Jon lived a comfortable life doing all of the things that a quiet, untraceable man could excel in.
Jon remains close friends with Elias to this day, as Elias is one of the few people willing to look past his curse and see him for the person he is.

History

Jon snuck into Elias' home with Geoffrey as a young apprentice. He had recently cursed himself and been kicked out of town. Geoffrey refused to teach him directly but allowed Elias to mentor him. The two worked together to get Jon's magic to stop draining the reserves (with the help of dragons).
Elias taught Jon everything he knows about magic, but the usefulness of a man that can appear anywhere and cannot make a sound became apparent to the local nobility. They subsequently requested many favors of him (some for money, some to avoid punishment), which even Elias knows little about, although he has an idea.
