Pincer Bay

The resting place for both the wise and the mighty.

Created and edited by Lo, the Wise
The greatest and largest bay on Araska, the Pincer Bay, as it was named, is of paramount strategic value to anyone seeking to control the nearby seas, specially the trade routes.

Geography

The Reasons for its Names

The Pincer Bay is known by many names, by many people, for it is a site as old as history itself.

The Pincer Bay

The Pincer Bay is its most common denomination, and it stands from the way its entrance and borders are shaped. There are two "fingers" or "arms" of grassland that simply extend themselves onto the sea, getting thinner and thinner, until they get around 100 meters from each other, creating an entrance that allows ships to come and go freely, allowing the local population of fish and marine mammals to migrate from the outside and inside of it freely as well.   When seen from the Fargrete Household, or some places fro the Great Library, it resembles the shape of a hand, reaching out to grab something minuscule in comparison, or a pair of pincers looking to do the same.   This very specific shape is, in fact, so perfectly made to support the great docks of Yaragph, without allowing waves to invade the inner waters of the bay, thus making so that the damage to docked ships is minimal to none, but still allowing the local ecosystem to thrive inside of it, allowing for fishing operations inside the bay itself, that scholars suspect that the bay itself was artificially created unknown centuries, or even millennia ago, most likely by the same people that built the great library.

The Bay of Knowladge

As mentioned before, the Pincer Bay is located extremely close to a great underground and above ground construction, most likely as old as the bay itself, the great Library of Yaragph. Once it was rediscovered by the Araskan Noblemen of house Fargrete, it already held a great deal of knowledge, both in the arcane arts of old, and on the sciences of the modern day, holding secrets of architecture, engineering, mathematics and so on.   In the early days this gave the bay the nickname of the bay of Knowledge, especially after the House Fargrete started to haul small fragments of knowledge that passed by it, held by travelers and traders.

The Bloody Bay

The Bay of Pincers has seen its fair share of battles, and for this it gets one of the least common names: The Bloody Bay.   Corpses and other remains of ancient battles have been found nearby over and over, and rusted and destroyed war machines, arms and armor have been recovered from its depths.   This name really cemented itself after the city was sacked by Emperor Kruber. A truly bloody day in history

The Bay of Sunken Souls

The Bay of Sunken souls is its latest given name, and it was only created after the city was sacked. This name is mostly used by the roughly 1000 soldiers that are garrisoned in the city at all times.   This name only exists because of the actions of one man and one man alone: Margoot III Fargrete. A sorcerer of great power, he was not the prince of Yaragph and the Arch Librarian at the time of the city's sacking. In order to deny his mortal enemies the privilege of having the great library for themselves, he sunk it and his household onto the depths of the earth and sea, killing his entire house in the process, and many, many people that were still at the household, including civilian refugees and soldiers. He alone survived this tragedy, only to be killed by Kruber in their epic duel.

Fauna & Flora

It is said that in the days of old, when House Fargrete was still young, the biological diversity found both inside and around the bay was immense, almost impossible to catalog properly. Sadly, almost centuries of fishing, sometimes bearing on the industrial scale, there remains very few species of fish and other marine life.
  • Sardines:

small fish who live in great and tight schools. The taste is not the best, but not the worse either, and they are fished in the thousands by both newcomers and veteran sailors.

  • Araskan Giant Tuna:

the giant tuna, as its name implies, is a giant of a fish. his meat is delicious, and one single specimen can feed an entire family for days. Nowadays it is a rare sight, both because of overfishing, and because it can only be captured by veteran and experienced sailors, using a special, extra tight and strong net. Any other net can easily be destroyed by the giant tuna. It generally eats algae, but any other vegetable would do as well, for it is able to eat almost anything. This does raise the possibility of an enclosed creation of these giant fish in the future.
