The Creeping Shadow
The Shadow was the gatekeeper between death and life responsible for bringing souls to whichever afterlife they were destined for. She did this job diligently until the Cataclysm. As the Cataclysm raged there was so much death that even she could not bear to face it so she crept away from the world trying to avoid having to face death again.
As a result of this upon death, souls no longer pass to the afterlife and instead get trapped in the veil, a strange world between life and death. It has also lead to corpses rising up again as undead within a couple of weeks of death. To counter this the clergy of the Creeping Shadow burn the corpses of the dead. Once a week the bodies of anyone who has passed is gathered by the Shadow Clergy and brought to the local Gravepyre to be burned.
