Devasteneia

"Devasteneia", also known as Angel Blight or the Touch of Celestials, it is a rare disease afflicting random people of all species with no common denominator.

Transmission & Vectors

The disease strikes randomly and is not infectious, but any children that the diseased may have in the future, will be born completely changed - those children are called the aasimar and are known to possess divine powers, that afflicted do not have.

Causes

The origin and cause is as of yet unknown, but it is theorized that the disease is contracted after an encounter with a creature from the Upper Planes or a deity. That theory has not been yet proven.

Symptoms

The early symptoms include random headaches, flashing lights that no one else sees and a burning sensation in random parts of the body, most commonly the face.
The disease later manifests in a horrifying way - it changes the bodies of the afflicted to look like a celestial being. Noted changes include:
  • Bright light emanating from face or hands
  • One to seven wings sprouting from the body
  • One to eleven new eyes opening on the whole body
  • White, golden or red feathers replacing hair
  • Audible heartbeat, that the afflicted is not able to hear
  • Booming voice, capable of breaking glass
The only consistent symptom, that all of the afflicted experience, is the change on the genetic level - all children of the afflicted are born as aasimars - they may possess the acquired symptoms of their parents, but are also able to channel divine energy.

Cultural Reception

The afflicted are a sight to behold - they are feared by some people and revered by others. The aasimar on the other hand don't provoke that much of a reaction, unless they possess some of the symptoms, such as additional eyes.
