The Vovale Tourney (Voh-Vah-Lay Tour-Nee)

Blood-sport & Battle-mages

The Vovale Tourney is a centuries-old tradition, steeped in both honor and danger. Held once a decade in the picturesque region of Toussaint, the tournament serves as a test for aspiring magicians seeking to establish their own minor house within the esteemed Vovale Court. However, the origins of the tourney are far from noble. It was established as a replacement for the barbaric blood games of the Vrian Empire, where captive mages were pitted against each other in savage battles for the entertainment of the imperial regime. The Five Houses Major, who had taken control of the government, saw the need to replace these cruel games with a more civilized form of magical competition.   Over the centuries, the Vovale Tourney has evolved into a spectacle that still demands strength, skill, and cunning from its participants, but without the bloodshed of its predecessor. Today, duels are stopped when one of the competitors is unable to continue, sparing their lives and allowing them to learn from their defeat.   However, there are rare occasions when the stakes are raised, and a challenge may be issued under the "Law of Dumont." This ancient code, named after the House that ruled the Vrian Empire, allows for a deathmatch between two mages if both parties agree to the challenge. Such duels are rare and often avoided, but they serve as a reminder of the dangers that come with seeking to establish one's own legacy within the Vovale Court.
