The Sleeping Lady

There are many legends and tales told of the mountains that surround the Northern Kingdom, but one of the most repeated is the legend of the Sleeping Lady.   The legend is uncommon in that it is not restricted to just one group. Originally an orcnean myth, the Sleeping Lady is also to be found in the mythology of the dwarves. Some have pointed to the similar myths as proof that the dwarves and orcnea share a common heritage.
The orcnean myth depicts the sleeping lady as a goddess that was part of a tribe that lived in the area when the world belonged to the gods. The lady was in love with a brave warrior of the tribe, but before they were bonded the warrior left to protect the people. On the day that the warrior left, the lady said that she would wait at the place they said their goodbyes for her beloved to return.   Many nights passed. Listening to the mournful songs of the wolves her beloved had left behind to guard her, the lady eventually fell into a deep sleep.   Word came to the tribe that the warrior had been slain in battle. Seeing how peacefully the lady slept, her fellow gods could not bare to waken her to such terrible news. They made the choice to let her remain asleep, watched over by her faithful wolves.   The Lady of the Mountain sleeps still, awaiting the return of her love.

The dwarven myth depicts the sleeping lady as their goddess. After the orcnea caused the great flood that banished the dwarves from their homeland, it was the Sleeping Lady that cut the land of the north to drain the flood waters. Myth says that she then laid down to block the plains from ever flooding again and to wait for her children, the dwarves, to reclaim the heart of fire mountains from the orcnea.
The Sleeping Lady mountain is located at the northern end of the great rift and is one of the few mountains to have gently rounded peaks as opposed to the sharper peaks of the mountains to the north or the more rugged peaks of both the Heart Fire mountains to the west and the Crown of the World mountains to the south.   The best view of the Sleeping Lady is from the northern slopes of the Heart of Flames mountain, looking north across the Great Rift. It is unfortunately difficult for most to enjoy this view, as the Heart of Flames is one of the most sacred mountains to the orcnea, second only to the Sleeping Lady Mountain.
