Justicars

The Justicar faith was formed by the followers of the God of Justice and is the largest organised religion in the known world.

The Book of Laws

The official work that guides the Temple of Justice and the followers of the God of Justice. The Book of Laws is seen as the indesputible written word of the God of Justice, so is deemed infalliable by the devout.   The book includes a variety of spells, rituals, fables, stories, and other material that supports the tenets of the Temple of Justice, and which the High Justicars and others can use in sermons and proselytising.   Among the tenets of the Book of Laws are:
  • The God of Justice is the one and only true God of the human race, all other deities are demons.
  • The Laws of the Book of Laws supersede those of any Kingdom.
  • Women are weak and susceptible to demonic corruptions, thus must have a man (father, husband, or brother) that will speak for them, be accountable for any debts, and hold possession of any property.
  • It is the duty of the faithful to bear children and to raise them in accordance with the Book of Laws and as devout servants of the God of Justice.
  • Clerics for the Temple of Justice must sanction any conception and be present for any birth, so as to protect the newborn child from the influences of demons that might seek to take the place of its soul.
  • If a person is too poor to pay for the absolution of their crimes, then it is a punshment from the God of Justice for crimes that the poor person refuses to confess to. Even the poorest would be granted the ability to find a tithing for the Temple of Justice if they truely sought forgiveness for their crimes.
  • Magic is a gift from the God of Justice to his most devout Justicars, any who are not Justicars and use magic are either stealing magic they were not gifted or using magic granted to them by demons.
  • Those who use demonic magics are acting against the God of Justice.

The Book of Justice

Similar to the Book of Laws, the Book of Justice is an expanded volume that includes various interpretations of the laws to help High Justicars understand the intent of the laws and how best to proceed when they must deal with someone that has broken the laws of the God of Justice.   Little is known about the actual contents of the Book of Justice, because only High Justicars are permitted to read from it.

The Home Book of Everyday Laws and Prayers

These are small books that have selected rituals and stories in them, chosen for their suitability for parents to teach them to their children at home. Among the rituals to be found in this book are the Extinguising of the Hearth's ritual as it is to be performed at home.

Tenets of Faith

The Justicars live their lives based on the laws written in The Book of Laws, which is the official text of the religion. The Book of Laws contains a collection of texs that includes fables, myths, rituals, spells, and other material that expresses the basic rules and beliefs of the followers of the God of Justice. Devout followers will adhere strictly to what is written in the Book of Laws as the guiding force for how they live, and believe that any laws of the kingdoms, or other systems of belief, are false if they conflict with what is written in the Book of Laws.

Ethics

The Justicars believe that all acts should serve to further the Temple of Justice and, by extension, the God of Justice. Faithful followers of the God of Justice attend services in the temples several times a month, or even daily, and offer tithes to the temple. These tithes are seen as a means to have any crimes or sins absolved, provided the faithful offers an appropriate value to the severity of the transgression.   The Justicars believe that demons lurk in the shadows and dark places in the world, and seek to lead the faithful away from the God of Jutice by enticing them to commit crimes or act in a manner contrary to what is written in the Book of Laws. Women are believed to be more susceptible to the influences of the demons, so the Justicars promote the strong control of women by devout men that follow the God of Justice.

Worship

Attendance at Temples of Justice is seen by the devout of the God of Justice as a neccessary activity to prove their belief. The High Justicars of the Temples of Justice will usually speak on the dangers of demonic influences, the needs of men faithful to the God of Justice to keep their families safe from possible demonic influences, and the importance of the work that the Temple of Justice does to safeguard the community from demonic influences. Tithes are collected during services as a way to absolve the faithful of their crimes and help pay for the efforts of the Temple of Justice to do the work of the God of Justice.

Granted Divine Powers

Those who commit to be Justicars can train to learn to use magic that has been sanctioned by the Temple of Justice.   While not all Justicars have the same magics, there are some spells and rituals that are specific to the Temple of Justice and that Justicars are known to be able to use. These include:
  • Speak to the Dead - Allows a Justicar to briefly communicate with the spirit of someone that has died. The longer the person has been dead, the more difficult it is to communicate with them.
  • Inflict Pain - Causes someone to feel pain; intensity is based on the mental strength of the Justicar compared to the person they are using the magic on.
  • Force Confession - allows the Justicar to force someone to say whatever the Justicar wants them to say, success is based on how weak or strong the person's will is compared to the Justicar's.
  • The Word of Truth - allows the Justicar to force someone to speak truthfully for a short time, success is based on how weak or strong the person's will is compared to the Justicar's.
  • See Demons - Allows the Justicar to see any demons that might be trying to conceal their presence. This spell does not allow others to see the demons.
  • Reveal Demons - Allows the Justicar to force any demons that might be trying to conceal their presence to be visible to the Justicar and others. This is a very difficult spell and is used only by the strongest of Justicars.
  • Trap Demons - This is a very difficult spell and is used only by the strongest of Justicars to contain demons within magical fields.
  • Dispell Demons - Allows the Justicar to send any demons they have trapped back to the underworld.
Note that some of the above magics are believed by some non-Justicars to be false magics that are nothing more than performances used to misslead others into believing in the power of the Justicars and their God of Justice.

Magic Use by Non-Justicars

Although the Justicars consider any magic use by non-Justicars to be demonic magics, they often will not take disciplinary actions against members of the nobility, or those working for the crown or as city guardsmen, so long as the magic use does not directly conflict with the teachings of the Book of Laws.

Political Influence & Intrigue

Temples of Justice are often used as political sanctuaries for those that are fleeing from justice, provided the crimes committed do not break any of the laws in the Book of Laws.  The devout followers of the God of Justice believe that the laws of the kingdoms of men should be dictated by the God of Justice through the High Justicars, the god's most devout followers, not by kings. Many among the most devout feel that the kingdoms should be disolved and the leadership of the people replaced by High Justicars of the Temple of Justice.
