Fen Shanty

Community Spirit, New Friends and New Beginnings, Colourful People.
On a series of low, marshy islands lies what has become known as Fen Shanty, a group of Settlements originally founded by the Tahaki, shortly after they left their underground works. In the centuries since then, Fen Shanty has become a sprawling network of settlements where anyone can find a fresh start and honest work, regardless who they were before - especially Ska’a who have recently left their Clutches. The Tahaki work ethic permeates Fen Shanty, and everyone works, according to their ability, for the greater good of the community as a whole. Due to the heavy influence of Tahaki mores on society in Fen Shanty, there is rarely any need for rulers, though some individuals who have done great services to society may sometimes be asked to advice on serious matters, where consensus may be lacking.   The Tahaki favour simple dwellings, usually of whitewashed bricks - after first draining the swampy ground and establishing a solid foundation of earthworks, of course - which would seem to belie the usual Tahaki riot of colours. This is because it is common to embellish structures with trellises of flowering vines, to shade patios with woven, multicoloured drapes and deck the halls with colourful rugs, all of which means there is little reason to make the basic structure anything other than a blank canvas. In this decoration, pattern and texture are almost as important as colour, and most households have a recurring theme in the patterns it is decorated in, which serves a function not unlike naming the home. While statues are rare in Fen Shanty, more abstract art is highly evident - it is even a communal pastime to build sculptures together, blending materials, textures and colours according to the whim and skill of each participant - such artwork may remain in place for decades, or be gone or replaced in weeks. Another peculiarity of Tahaki Settlements is the Barter Squares that pop up spontaneously from time to time, when there is need. They often begin with just a single Tahaki with something to trade - be it an item, a service, or even just a share of a future crop - who will soon be joined by dozens of others, pitching in where needed.
