History

The Kingdom of Hokka conquered the region in the first half of the 6th century. By 597, after the formation of the Hokkan Empire, it was restructured into the Province of West-Ienazh with a Hokkan governor as its ruler. This led to growing discontent which first turned violent in the early 620s when riots in Esixos broke out. The provincial government brutally put down these protests and publicly executed their leaders, a lot of which were local priests. While this stopped the riots at first, further restrictions on the religious freedoms of the inhabitants of Esixos eventually lead to a new wave of riots in 637 during which the governor and other Hokkan officials were killed. At this point the Empress Kara I took action and sent an army to pacify Esixos.
Now this had developed into a full-blown civil war that would rage on for another decade, during which the Hokkans failed to use their superior numbers and technology to retake the province. With help from the Kingdom of Ayel West-Ienazh finally became independent in 648 and the State of Xakuma (the Aylian name for the region) was formed.
Since then, Xakuma has remained close allies with Ayel and later the Realm of Yane while still having to fear occasional attempts from the Hokkans to retake it during the Hokkaylian war. In the peace agreement between Hokka an Ayel, Hokka was forced to officially recognize Xakuma as independent, ending half a century of skirmishes at their borders.

Territories

Roughly the north-east of Ienas. Before the Kingdom of Hokka conquered the region, it was populated by small city states, petty kindoms and nomadic tribes. Under the Empire the region was folded together into the Province of West-Ienazh and given a central government in Esixos. Over time its inhabitants began to understand themselves as belonging to the same group, leading them to declare themselves a unified state after their successful revolt.

Religion

Xakumans practice a more strict version of the Xomay belief. Since they fought against the Empire to preserve their religious freedoms, military and religious roles had been merged during the war, ending any kind of secularism that had existed in the old government system. In contrast to the wildly different and decentralized practices of Xomay in the rest of the world, Xakuma developed clear hierarchies in the priesthood and codified the local versions of the different deities. Because of this, Xakumans are generally much more pious and fervent than other believers in the Xomay pantheon, resembling more the followers of the Mission of Kalou.
