Kara Tandofir never was supposed to be the Empress of Hokka. Born in 643 as the youngest of her six siblings, she enjoyed a great deal of freedom during her childhood. But as the years passed it became clear that she was Longlived and it was clear that she could survive all her brothers and sisters until she was next in line for the throne. Following her coronation at the age of 52 years she vowed to end the decades long conflict with the Kingdom of Ayel - only two years later she made good on that promise by signing the Treaty of Pelxeri.
Since then she has expanded the territory of the Empire into the Lands of Amruth in an unprecedented colonising effort that lasted for more than half a century.
Due to her longevity Kara II. has earned the nickname "The Eternal Queen", and is met with more and more suspicion as the years go on. Since the city Verne-Charne was destroyed during a volcanic eruption in 795 - the same year as the Empresses 100-year anniversary - there have been calls for her abdication throughout the Empire.

In the years before her rise to power, Kara started to assemble an inner circle of other Longlived who are now amongst the most powerful people in the Empire. Members of this inner circle include the chronicler and poet Sin Aila, the architect Medhi Re-No, the spymaster Ghai, the fleetmaster (and second cousin) Hok Tandofir, the priest Hesan Inoi, the treasurer Zhoosu Ikka, and her bodyguard Nari. They are fiercely loyal to Kara - until now, none of them have betrayed her.
