Prompt #23 Unit or squad who guards important person – the Mazoni

“You have to, the Maxsonis are under sentence of death if they are captured. You'll be killed if they find you,” Yurieth insisted. Calista shook her head, refusing. “I have family here in hiding in the Amaxso mountains. We were once warriors and yet we do nothing for our fellow citizens. You did more today than we have in centuries. It is time we stood up and fought for the Light again on our own world, so those in exile on Aetheria can return home.”

The Relic of Time… When the twin lords were 82.
The morning after their mother’s memorial, there were a dozen female warriors waiting at his father’s home. “What’s going on?” Damien asked his brother, but Karstien refused to speak to him, so he looked at his father and grandfather. “Long ago, in the first kingdom, our house was allied to the tribes of the Amazo Mountains, their females were the fiercest warriors. They were almost destroyed in the Great Cataclysm but some survived and carried on the traditions of their ancestors,” Adamos explained. “The clans have sent their strongest so the Mazoni Warrioresses may be our allies again.” Kaleth nodded, “Since your mother was… murdered. They have volunteered to protect and care for you boys. The Mother-Warriors will be assigned to guard you both at all times while they seem to be merely bakers or housekeepers or gardeners to those outside our house.” “Young lords, we vow to be always vigilant. To care for you as our own family members and to always make you good things to eat,” one said, and they all knelt.

War of Prophecies… Before the second war began…
Mazoni Warriors and good witches intermarried during the establishment of the Western Kingdom, gifting the warriors with unusual longevity and the witches with souls. Their oddly blended family served the last high house and had for centuries before the twin brothers’ first war. They served for generations before the twin lords’ father vanished almost three centuries ago, and before the twin lords’ grandfather went into the Light the day before the first war a century ago. They had once been many, been special, proven gifted, and unwaveringly loyal, but now, they could be counted on two hands and still have fingers left over. The days of the Mazoni Knights and Warrioresses seemed at an end as the last war faded into distant memory.

12oo years after the second war was won…
Fiona, the last Mazoni, a descendant of Milady and Mendera entered. “All is prepared, High Lord Karstien,” she reported bravely but he could see the tears she would not let fall. She was an excellent swordswoman and baker. The mother warriors had become so few because there was no need for them. He had only begun training them again in earnest when Damien’s sarcophagus had vanished. War was a distant memory during his son’s reign, but Karstien knew it would come again when his brother woke. “Very well... You have the swords?” High Lord Karstien questioned. She held out his father’s ancient lightning summoning sword captured by the Mazoni Milady from Damien, and the ruby scarab sword that once belonged to the Mazoni Marimon. He had gone to Asrien’s kingdom to train the Mazoni clan there and three generations ago, most of the Mazoni had moved there to escape the spreading ice sheets as the climate changed. He nodded, adding, “Keep them safe, I may need them someday.” Fiona bowed, “As my Lord commands.” The tears in her hazel eyes began to leak out. Lord Karstien trained her from the time she was five years old to carry on the traditions of the Mazonis. She was closer to him than anyone in her family this generation. He gave her a quick hug goodbye; he had watched so many generations of her family live and die. It was not easy to say goodbye. His silver eyes were tired, but they also held a mixture of sadness and relief. When he woke, it would only be a few short years until he met Davin and Ezra for their first time. They would come to the past, help him defeat Damien, and return to him in the future, beyond that he did not know what to expect of the far future. Karstien wiped her cheeks with his thumbs. He pressed a kiss to her forehead in a fatherly gesture. “I will be alright, Fiona. Thank you for your loyalty.” “My sword and my spirit serve the Light.” Fiona vowed, “My children and grandchildren shall as well.” Karstien entered the Room of Eternal Peace. Sadly, Myken, the half-human great-grandson of his old Presbyt Mykle, sealed him in. Karstien drank the potion Myken had given him, then laid down as the machine turned on. He could feel his body shutting down as he was put in statis. Green light filled the room accompanied by a strange discordant sound, then the reign of High Lord Karstien, ruler of the Western Kingdom, ended in an emerald flash.

Manpower

Lineage of the Mazoni from the first war victory to the start of the second war “I am the Mazoni Milady. Mazoni is our clan’s name but also means mother warrior as a title, and is passed from mother to daughter, or in my case, grandmother to granddaughter for generations. I am the great-granddaughter of Marimon the Mazoni, and Myles the Elder Healer, he was a Presbyt, granddaughter of Myrna the Mazoni and Lars, a knight. I am the daughter of the daughter, Meloni, who was a seer, and Trabor, a Master Mason and Miner. My twin Motle was a knight until his death five years ago. Now Mitchle is the last son of our family to carry the title. I may be. His twin Matthias got our father’s title and was head of the Miner’s guild, but he is dead now too. I maybe a baker, but I am also a warrior. My family has served Lord Karstien, his father Lord Kaleth, and his grandfather High Lord Adamos for over four hundred years. My husband was a fisherman, when he died many years ago, I returned to serve. I took over my twin’s duty upon his death and am here now.”   In the modern times, there are only 3 Mazoni left, the daughters of Duncan Garrett, the last Mazoni Knight who was killed by D. Adam Neimad (Prince Damien) while the girls were young. Fianna, Cierra, and Moyra Garrett found Karstien and aided him and his allies. During the last Great War against the Shadows, Fianna and Moyra begin rebuilding the Mazoni Clan.

Equipment

The ruby scarab is the symbol of the original Maxsoni clan from the Amaxso Mountains on Xelusia before the Cataclysm War.

Weaponry

Mazoni warrioresses and knight are recognized by the ruby scarab-crested swords they carry.

Structure

The Mazoni serve the House of Adamos, they followed the orders of first High Lord Adamos, then Lord Kaleth, then Lord Karstien... When it became clear Damien had fallen into Shadow, there was a rift among the Mazoni. They refused to obey the youngest of the House of Adamos and accepted Lord Karstien's choice not to kill him after his capture. The most capable warrior is usually the leader after the Semi-immortals.

Training

Mazoni warriors and warrioresses begin training at 5 years old and enter their proving years for a decade starting at 12 years old. After they reach 22, they are eligible to become a commander based on skill, tactical ability and intelligence. They are also expected to live unobtrusively as bakers, gardeners, or housekeepers, because normally such people are unnoticed and unrecognized for the warriors they really are.
