Pineclose

Located to the north, Pineclose is a town that was in decline even before the Cataclysm. Empty, decrepit buildings lay on the outer area of the town while those closer to the middle are beaten by exposure. The town follows an unusual border to the north, built against empty space and snow. Little remains here for anyone, a town disconnected and abandoned by all but its inhabitants.

Government

The different species of Pineclose each oversee their own people and attend their own laws and customs within the town. Interaction is limited, but generally, the laws followed are those of which species inhabits the area; in the Human area, their laws are paramount while in the Halfling region their laws take priority instead. The Elven people remain separate in their residency, but regardless have a district to apply their laws to.

Defences

The few guards present have old but serviceable armour and weapons, pockmarked with rust and blemishes from time. While the Elves and Halflings don't serve as guards for the town, they prove valuable in defence through their skills as archers and slingers.

Infrastructure

A number of simple docks provide mooring points for the fishing boats, while wood harvested from the Gleamelm Glade is carefully taken and cut by hand tools in some of the outer buildings.

History

Pineclose was settled at the edge of the Steelbark Pines to secure against another settlement being founded there. With support from the Circle of Druids in the forest, the town was able to survive and grow, trading traditional pinewood to the other settlements.   However with the Cataclysm, much of the forest nearby was destroyed. Left suddenly exposed to the north winds and stripped of their only exportation material, Pineclose fell off of the trade map, finding itself without the ability to gain necessary materials through trade. The town is able to reduce its decay and can sustain its small population, but has little hope for recovering and becoming a living town once more.

Architecture

The buildings are composed of wood, with small carved stone blocks used in the corners and doorways. While any damage has been repaired, without the ability to use advanced tools or lumbermills, the hand tools have provided the means to do so. Such repairs appear somewhat similar to blisters upon the skin of the buildings, where layers have been added to ensure a seal against wind and snow.

Geography

The area around is flat, but incapable of serious farming. The northern area is permanently frozen over, and while there's land to the south which can be developed, it freezes over in winter and kills any plants or seeds that remain. What does grow is unable to achieve complete growth, leading to stunted crops and a loss of seeds for replanting each time spring arrives.

Natural Resources

With the loss of almost the entire northern forest, the only wood source is from the Gleamelm Glade. Collecting such wood is dangerous, and often those who enter can only succeed by scouring for fallen or dead trees to take. The lack of mines nearby and tools prevents exploration for undiscovered seams of materials. The only abundant resource is from the ocean, but none travel so far to the north that Pineclose can rely on trading this resource to survive.
